Hi, I am a student in a Welding program at my high school. I need some help with ideas for a job skill demonstration for my English class. Basically I have to give a 5-7 minute demo on a skill that is required to be mastered for my trade, but it goes without saying that I won't be able to weld in a normal high school classroom setting in front of 25 people. So, I am a little stumped on what I could do for 5 minutes that would represent what welding is about.I am not asking for a demo walk-through, just some ideas I could think about and possibly put in the demonstration.Rules (This is why I can't figure anything out)- No compressed gasses are allowed.- No flammable liquids.Plus other obvious safety rules in a normal classroom that I don't think I really need to state. My background in my welding program - I have done and passed OFW and OFC, as well as PAC, and most of SMAW, except for overhead F4. I have not passed but have started MIG.Any help and ideas at all would be very helpful. Thanks.
Reply:Blueprint reading with welding symbols. My name's not Jim....
Reply:Thanks, I can't believe I completely forgot about blueprints. That would actually work perfect, so now I guess I'll just borrow a big print from my welding teacher.
Reply:Does it have to be a 'practical' demo? You could always bore them to death with a power-point presentation explaining a wide variety methods i.e. mig tig stick O-A or do the same with consumables and their applications. You could reinforce it by bringing in a bunch of different rods so people can SEE how similar they all appear while droning on about their individual characteristics and applications.
Reply:A short, non-boring PPT presentation with video clips of material preparation, welding shots, proper PPE, etc.SRO1911 beat me to the consumables and various rods but what about a few samples of the different weld joints (filet, lap, butt, plug . . .) as well?Last edited by duaneb55; 12-08-2010 at 09:38 PM.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Yeah, I had though about making some joints and taking them and some extra plate, kinda like a before and after thing. But I may just take some finished joints and a related blueprint with a presentation on either different processes or rods. I think that should be sufficient for a 5 minute presentation. Thanks guys.
Reply:Hello jake77, here's one other possibility. Get some joints tacked up and use a caulking gun with latex caulk, maybe white, to show drag, oscillation, stepping, etc. for fillets, laps, and even flat beads. Could be a bit tricky/messy but certainly visual and possibly representative of gun/stick angles, drag/push progression and would also represent skill levels required for welding. As you mentioned in another of your responses, you could include blueprint to detail what you were doing with the "weld" joints. Out there a bit, but something to ponder. Good luck and best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:maybe the school would permit a small brazing demo with a mappair torch?fire extinguisher present of course..
Reply:x2 on welding symbols. It will also help you benifit learning more about welding symbols. You could also do something along the lines as showing them how to calculate heat input, welding cost, how to calculate the weight of a weld, ect. possibilies are endless. --Gol' |
