I need to ask what electrode might work the best my project. I have installed a 2x2 crossbar between the bedrails of my truck. It will be used to winch my ATV up into the truck and also as a tie-down point. I now have to remove the bar and weld on 3 D-rings. The crossbar is 3/16" square stock, mild steel. The D-dings are forged. The electrodes I have are 6013, 7014, and 7018. Will any of these work well for this project? The steel for the D-ring capture is 1/4. I did read on another site about welding on this type of ring and it stated, "turn the heat down as they are soft." Can you all recommend a rod and amp setting? I will be using an AC/DC 225 Lincoln. I figure the first pass needs to be my best, and I don't want to destroy one of these ring captures if I can help it. Also, should I run AC or DC? I don't have any forged scrap to practice with....Thanks,Brent Attached ImagesLast edited by Brent13; 01-31-2008 at 03:40 PM.Reason: AddLincoln 3200HD MIGLincoln AC/DC 225 Stick
Reply:I would go with the 7018 1/8"(if that is the size you have) around 120 amps DC.  I wouldn't worry too much about destroying the part.  If you notice undercut, just turn your machine down or find a better angle to weld at. You might want to practice on scrap beforehand so you can get your weld dialed in.Last edited by Brainfarth; 01-31-2008 at 03:45 PM.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Just weld it on as if you would anything else.  All rods listed will work.  I put 54 of those on a few weeks ago.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I thought it being forged might throw a wrinkle in the works. I will proceed with 7018 and crank it to the machines max on DC, 125 amps. Thanks,BrentLincoln 3200HD MIGLincoln AC/DC 225 Stick
Reply:Here is the job.  http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=18285'I used pulsed spray mig, but......If you have 125 amps, 3/32 rod at 90 amps might be easier.  More than one pass is fine.Half is flat, the other side is over head.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:David R,Nice looking work on the Bobcats. Very impressive. I would MIG these on, but my little 3200 might be a little hard pressed. I love stick and need the practice, so stick it is. Thanks for the pictures. I will do mine off the truck and flat, so I expect mine to come out looking good. I will try and post some pictures of my success or lack of....BrentLincoln 3200HD MIGLincoln AC/DC 225 Stick
Reply:Got my project finished, thanks for the advice. I welded on the rings with 1/8th 7018, 115amps and DC+. It worked very well I thought. I just did a single pass on all rings, but added a second pass on the bottom of the middle ring. This is the ring I will winch the ATV on. The outside rings are just additional tie points. Finished it off with a truck bed liner spary can from Napa. I did a test load of the ATV and did not see any flex or movement. I think it is going to work very well. Now I can load under control and not slam into my toolbox. A picture is coming, get seem to post one at the moment. BrentLincoln 3200HD MIGLincoln AC/DC 225 Stick
