So I was at an ag show today looking at auto dark helmets and one of the welding supply house's sales guys was showing me the huntsman helmets.  The price sure seemed right at $148 for the 951p model, but I was wondering if this is a good helmet or if I should just step up and get a speedglas?  Any thoughts on the matter from you folks that have a lot more experience than I?
Reply:I own two Speedglass hoods, one a year or so newer. Although they look alike, they take different clear lenses inside. Trying to get new clears from the local weld supply is tenuous at best (with the hood in hand). You must have the part #'s!!! The price of the clears (as well as the cost of the hood) will ensure carefull handling of your hood. I don't care for the way the faceplate pulls off for access to the front clear lens. That being said, I do like my hoods, because I have cheaters in them for TIG welding. I have another autodark (Jackson)that I use to stick or MIG with.If I had to do it again, I would make sure that hood had 4 sensors not 2. My hoods have a tendency to shut off if obstructed by the torch, weldment, or my hand. I adjust my sensitivity way up, but then the hood stays dark too long after completing the weld, especially with SS. I would also make sure the controls were on the outside of the hood. After a period of inactivity, my hood shuts off and I either have to take the hood off and press the on button or reach inside and press it.Even though I have not used it, Miller has just such a hood. Best of all it is not their most espensive.
