I am new here and I am also new to welding. I have found on Craig’s List an oxygen tank that the user states"the cap must be rusted on real tightLinde tankOxygen label"Is this a tank that I could purchase and take to a local welding center to have exchanged for a full tank or is the tank still owned by Linde?   I am not sure how this works. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Reply:This is the only picture that I have of the tank. Other than the picture the seller only told me that the cap must be rusted on real tightLinde tankoxygen labelAny and all help would be greatThanks
Reply:I would ask if the guy could shove a wrench in the slots to break free the safety cap. In Canada, we can take the bottles in certain companies and they replace them with a filled newer tank or we can get it re-certified for around $45. A refill with an exchanged tank is $50 so Im going to do a swap on my old tank. Also the numbers and letters on the tank tell you how old it is. From that you can figure out the expiry which I think is 10 years?Welcome to the forum

Reply:Assuming the seller can get the valve cap off I would then inquire about the current hydrostatic test date.Oxygen tanks need to be tested every 10 years these dates are stamped around the top of the tank. It goes month/test facility code - year 7L-00 for example would be July 2000. L is the code for the hydrostatic testing facility. So it would need to pass it's next test before July 2010 or it can't be refilled past that date. Each time it's tested a new date is stamped on the tank the earliest date is the date of manufacture. What size tank you can take to your local welding supplier to exchange depends on their policies. You don't get cylinders filled by the way you exchange them and pay the fill fee and the hydrostatic testing fee if the cylinder is out of date.My local welding supply for example will only exchange oxygen cylinders up to 60 cubic feet above that they want a rental agreement. Just go there or call and ask because it will vary.Last edited by Krankshaft; 12-20-2010 at 02:03 PM.
Reply:It is only 10 years beyond the last test, IF there is a star stamped with the date.Otherwise it is 6 years.
Reply:Sorry forgot to mention that. While on that topic if there is a + Plus sign after the date it means the tank qualifies for a 10% overfill.I thought without the star it was 5 years?Last edited by Krankshaft; 12-20-2010 at 02:13 PM.
Reply:I recieved another email from the person that is selling the tank and after looking at all the rust around the valve I dont know if I shoud purchase this or run.   Let me know what you would do. The seller did tell me that the cap was rusted on the bottle and he had a time getting it off. Thanks for all your information and input on this.
Reply:My only concern is the size of the cylinder. Near me the shops don't want to deal with "large" cylinders that are not their own. By "large" I mean like 280cf cylinders. My 282cf cylinders are aproxinametly 5' tall to the top of the valve (give or take an inch or two) and about 9" in diameter.  My customer owned 125cf cylinder is about 4' tall and 7" in dia roughly by memory (it's burried in the garage) My guys will take any cylinder thats 150cf or smaller in reasonable condition as trade. I've swapped out ones that looked a LOT worse than the one you are showing. However they will only swap or fill their own cylinders if they are bigger as those they consider leased. I do have an account with them, so the never question any large cylinder with their name on it even if I'm borrowing it from a friend..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Short answer,  it varies by region. One guy above said they don't fill cylinders only exchange. Another guy says they don't service large bottles with a lease agreement. In my case, my bottles are 300 cu/ft units and I own them. I pull up to the welding supply, remove my regulator and cap the bottle, slide my bottle out of the rack and they fill it on the spot. I pay 30 dollars for a fill.  You'll need to see how it works in your area to know for sure.Last edited by Ayers Garage; 12-21-2010 at 11:53 AM.Kevin- Springtown, TexasTruck:Chevy cab/ chassis 1 ton dually, big block and flatbedMiller BobcatVictor cutting rigTool boxes crammed full of stuffShop:Millermatic 250Lincoln 135Lincoln 225AC tombstone
Reply:The tank seems to have a lot of corrosion but the tanks can take a lot. I have seen some pretty rusty tanks that were fine. Still not sure about the expiry and how good the valve is?How much does he want for it? Is it worth your time?
Reply:Hmm, wonder how he got the cap unstuck?  Hope he didn't use penetrating oilGordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
