Let me start off by saying that I only weld as a hobby and have a great appreciation for those that make a living at this. I have a case where I have assembled an aluminum frame welded together. Now I need to attach a sheet of aluminum to the top of this, but will not have access to the underside to weld from below. My question is, how can this be accomplished? I was thinking of cutting slits in the sheet than line up with the braces below. Then I could essentially weld the slits closed. Is this a reasonable method or do you have any other suggestions? Thanks,Miller 252Miller 30A SpoolgunMiller Auto-Darkening Elite HelmetHypertherm PowerMax 30
Reply:Pop rivets, screws, glue...lots of ways....what you describe is perfectly acceptable, and is done every day, but it is not always the best way for one that may not have the experience needed to get things perfectly flat and nice...Holes drilled, and then welded flush to the top, completely filled, are called plug welds---Slots cut, and then just one pass run around inside it, not full or flush to the top, are called rosette welds....have fun, take pictures, report back and let us know how it went--- |
