Any one with any experience on running 6013 1/8 with the Maxstar? I have an abundance of this rod & just picked up a Maxstar for portability & was curious to people who use them all the time what rod & size have you found works best for general repairs on mild steel & galvenized applications like fence pipe & dirty steel? I have read it does not like 6010American by birth Southern by the Grace of God
Reply:6011 and 7018 will have you covered for most things. I keep both in 3/32 and 1/8". I don't like 6013 much.My name's not Jim....
Reply:I run a lot of 3/32 7018. Been years since I've run 6013 and was running it on one of those AC buzz boxes. You're right about the 6010, the maxstar 150 doesn't particularly like it. I've welded up a few pipe joints with 6010 roots with a maxstar. While not my first choice -you'd be surprised the things you can make work when you're in a bind.
Reply:I know my Maxstar refuses to burn 5P+ correctly. Ive successfully run 6011 with it though. 7018 is fine.A little off topic, but I want to pick up the air-cooled TIG torch for it. The one with the thumbscrew gas valve, and separate shielding gas hose, as my 150 S does not have the flow-through Dinse, or solenoid...Anybody know the Miller part #?? Reply:Thanks for the replies, I am going to pick up some 6011 and 7018 in 3/32 & 1/8 and try them!American by birth Southern by the Grace of God
Reply:I just bought one this week as well and will share what I gathered so far. I have the slightly older version that came with only the 120 20V plug, with the horizontal post. Didn't have any 20V plugs in the house so I went ahead and built and 120 20V plug to 220 welder plug extension cord so I really can't comment on running it 120. However my uncle has said it works but is a totally different machine on 220.As far as rods I've posted up some pictures of tinkering around this week with the machine. It will burn 1/8" 6013 rods just fine @ 100-120 amps. If you aren't running the machine on 220 3/32 would probably be a better option. So far I've run 4 rods through the machine, 6013 1/8" and 1/16", 6011 3/32 and 7018 3/32. I now know why everyone swears by the 7018 over 6011. The beads I was able to run with this machine wtih 7018 compared to 6013 was completely night and day so while the 6013 you have would be great practice if its not running perfect pick up some 7018 and the 3/32 size seems to work well with the machine.I sold a thunderbolt to get the maxstar and dragging the maxstar between my shop and barn is so much nicer with the same power capabilities. |
