I'm looking for recommendations on metalworking DVDs to buy.Topics like:- TIG welding- Plasma gouging- Milling-Toolmaking- Metal buffing & finishingThere are lots of DVDs available on the web - would love to hear which ones are the best.Thanks,-Jeff
Reply:the few i have bought are worthless, i won't buy any until this url gives it a GOLD STAR......
Reply:Jeff,if your just wanting simple theory you can probably find dvd's covering the topics.. but they wont teach you the process's..  these are trade skills, they take years and years to learn.for the tig welding i have never bought a dvd yet, i probably will sometime.. i hear that miller has some good material....  weldingtipsandtricks.com is referenced alot, and has some useful free videos.... again tig welding from a toolmakers standpoint is nothing you learn in minutes or a couple hours. it takes years, its a perfected skill such as toolmaking.. sure you can take a class and watch a video and get a good understanding, but its not going to teach you to tig weld.. to me tig welding is an art form just like toolmaking/mold making.  watching a true tig welder is almost hypnotic to me, a true artist with a brush if you will..plasma gouging i have to clue, i have seen an old air arc used before, dont know if its anywhere near the same or not, not familiar with plasma gouging at all.. milling will be difficult also, because there are so many different variables...again, its time that will teach you.. you can get an understanding and theory, but it takes years to be efficient at it, ask any machinist/toolmaker/moldmaker. i dont think you will find a dvd on toolmaking you might, but i would see the seller as being a shikester honestly...  tool&die making takes years to learn not hours, there are so many variables its ridiculous and it will even vary between designers and engineers,... you might get a dvd explaining the theory and process enough to give you an understanding though.. i took a class for 4 yrs and thought i learned alot, it was almost enough to make me dangerous in a tool shop. seems like ive seen some buffing and polishing videos somewhere, possibly caswellplating.com or eastwood.. might have been summit racing...  if your talking ornamental/finish polishing and buffing that is... if your talking about polishing a mold, then again it is a time thing you dont learn it in a couple hrs or days...  something else you could do is find a local vocational school, and ask the supervisor/principal that your interested in these topics and see if he could set you up with the respective class tours...  better yet, taking a class would be worth way more than any dvd would ever be..  good lucktackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:I don't have any affiliation nor do I vouch for the quality/value of these, but here are some links.www.Machinist-U.com   $22.95 for $1,216 worth of metalworking DVDswww.mastermachinistvideos.com  $34.95 ea (total of three available)www.precisionmeasure.com   3 DVDs for $ 79.00www.bay-com.com    many availableAs I said, I do not and have never owned or rented these. When I bought my Maxstar, the rep gave me a couple of DVDs on TIG which were not bad. If you are a regular at your LWS, ask them, they might have something stashed away.
Reply:I've rented a couple Ron Fornier and Kent White DVD's from SmartFlix.com . . . about $10 for a one week rental.  The site has customer ratings of each to help with your selection.    They have DVD's on a lot of different subjects.JimDynasty 300DXSmith He/Ar gas mixerMM350PHobart Handler 120Smith LW7, MW5, AW1A
Reply:Thanks for the recommendations.   Maybe I should have included a note that I have no illusions about being able to watch a DVD and then know how to perform a new skill.I'm just trying to add one more aid in my request to build my skills over the years.  When I started to learn MIG welding I took a class and work in a welding shop to do some hands on learning in the real world.  But I did find using DVDs to refresh my memory on the theory that I had learned in class. In any endeavor I've always found it quicker and easier to build the skills when I've got a good understanding of the theory.
