Reply:Here is some of the other side. I ran a piece of 1/8" X 4" from one side through the middle. Made it easier and faster than the first piece.CenterIts 5:00, the truck is going out tomorrow, so I have this on both sides for another day when I can get the truck. I used 27 feet of 1/8" X 4" and 5' of 3/16" X 5".Look at the welds on the previous repair. Amazing aint it?thanks for watching. 6 hours in the job today.David Last edited by David R; 03-03-2008 at 08:12 PM.Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Nice job. I'm really glad to see I am not the only one doing a lot of this type work. Very similar to all the roll off containers I have been repairing. I've actually started taking pics of my jobs when I have time. I am fixing to start on a major modification of a semi trailer and intend to take a lot of them as I go.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.

Reply:When done, I spray the metal with Napa Ruberized undercoating. It kinda hides frame repairs I do so the DOT doesn't notice em.Thanks for the comments. I get a LOT of that kind of stuff here. Its the salt they use on the roads. Reply:looin good david. hope the weather holds for ya, if you are working outside. do you like the challenge in repair work, or would you rather build from scratch?Zap, after I move into the bigger shop with an overhead hoist, bring it on down!Tortis, I take most of what comes in the door. I have customers. I do what they ask. If they are too far off the wall, I say no. I enjoyed doing this except grinding the rust off. This job was done inside. Build from scratch is on thursday, stay tuned for pics. Papa65 and ASOD, I have never had any problems. That truck is too old to have a puter. David Real world weldin. Reply:David, I have an extra heavy duty rail road tie that I always slide in across the frame in the back then loop a 3/8" chain around the end sticking out go around the back of the frame over the other end and pull as tight as I can and hook. then I use the boom of the carry deck crane under the front part and chain the block to the rear so the boom cant swing from side pres sure. Just cant be to safe. As a side note 2 guys were leaning over the truck frame with the box in the air not far from here some time ago, wellyou know the rest of the story.Last edited by lars66; 03-04-2008 at 06:59 PM.

Reply:Looks like a Pittsburgh truck. We had a fire truck come in with the cab supports almost gone. One shop wanted $12,000 to repair it. They claimed to have to remove the cab to repair it.2 days later, it was done without removal of the cab and for 1/4 the cost.
Reply:The idea is to have the tie across the top of the truck frame and then chained back in to the V by the box hinge point. put the chain around one end of the tie next to the frame run around the back of the frame and do the same on the other side. By looping the chain around the tie ends the chain is doubled with a way to hook the grab hook with out trying to adjust the chain length. I hope this makes a little sense. If the tie can't slide forward the box can't come down with out shearing both ends of the tie off.Last edited by lars66; 03-04-2008 at 09:55 PM.
Reply:How come a lot of these dump bed I see are never cantilevered? My dad uses a dump bed for his line of work and it was easy to stump the hydrolics before we cantilevered the bed.

Reply:I finished it off today. Here is the rest of the work. I had to call the customer and get a little more money. He came over and looked at it. Said it looked like a nice job and keep at it till its done. I ran into more rust on the last cross support. So I added some wings. I had to switch from pulsed mig to straight mig where things were not very solid. Especially when weldng overhead. When I hit rust that was through and through, the wire would ball up and drop on me. Ouch! This is the slot for the tailgate actuator rod\Horizontal pulsed sprayReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Here are the end pieces of the box. The old ones weren't doing much. This is where they goOverhead pulsed sprayWhere it was new to old, I went vertical down 2 passes (yeah I did) Mig. New to new was vertical up pulsed spray. 92/8 was used for both processes, .030 wire at between 200 and 350 ipm depending on what I was welding to. I added 2 more pressure treated 4 x 4 posts in the back of the box for safety. I am going to borrow a rr tie from the rr yard behind my shop. Job is done, customer is happy.David Last edited by David R; 03-08-2008 at 06:16 AM.Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Nice repair, there's just no easy way to do that job.Another way to save a truck body is to cut one side, and the rails, with a "C" or "L" then push a channel or angle all the way through.

Reply:Good job. Not much fun being under one of them where all the dirt and rust can fall in the eyes or down the neck. the weld spatter and hot gobs fall and you cant get away from them.
Reply:I am interested in knowing what their plans are to protect the bed from rusting any further. Personally I would protect my investment and have the underside blasted and coated. For what you have in labor to weld all those patches they could have protected it from the beginning and saved them selfs the hassle. How ever us welders gotta have work too! The second picture is my problem, first valence in the front of the bed box! I'm thinking that vehicle saw some beach fording, all of the cross members were full of sand, one even had a small piece of oriental porcelin pottery mixed in w/the sand? Reply:Gee Bruce, It makes me feel right at home!Job is done, I sprayed it with Napa ruberized undercoating. What I did won't rust through before the rest of it does. 13 hours in the job. Yeah, standing under that and grinding at eye level gets tiring. So did climbing up and down all day. Customer is happy. So am I that its done.
