Reply:You could stick weld thin wall tube however at 1/8th wall the fit would have to be perfect.   If you had any gaps over a sixteenth you will blow through.  You could fill gaps by tacking quickly but you risk porosity and slag inclusions.
Reply:I stick weld sixteen gauge often, fourteen gauge all the time, nothing but a thing.  You know you've got it down when you can vertical up eight inch fourteen gauge purlin butt welds with eighth inch rod.I used to race on the half and quarter mile dirt in California along with some figure eights for fun.  I've also raced dirt here in Texas.  I stick welded all my stuff and never had a serious problem even though I was in some pretty interesting crashes.I would have a tendancy to recommend stick over mig just because most people who don't weld for a living are caulking more than they are welding with mig. With stick you can watch the parent metals melt and the filler rod fill.  You know you have a weld.life is good
Reply:All positions, give one of these guys a call http://www.ihra.com/tech/chassis_certification.html  When you break the 12 second mark, they will go over that car with a fine tooth comb. I hope this helps...
Reply:Interesting how everyone wants to get into the specification industry rather than adapt exisiting regulations from larger welding steel structure standards agencies.  Just an observation.  Full strength welds can be created by many processes.  ..  In fact I would say some weld faults are easier to hide/cover up  if one chooses the process.  Of course I wouldn't now much about covering up stuff :')))
Reply:(lotechman) How many cars have you built?  All positions, is asking about a roll cage for a car. what are you talking about...

Reply:I am just saying that for some reason the requirements for roll bars seem to be made up rather than taken from a higher authority such as welding codes made up by American Welding Society or ASME or in other countriies such as in Britain The Welding Institute.  These groups have made up codes and requirements for all kinds of structures from dynamic loaded structures such as racing car frames and aircraft frames to relatively static structures such as buildings.  It would seem sensible to me that a lot of custom made require ments could simply cite the paragraphs and clauses applicable in standard welding codes.A good frame builder would qualify his shop to a code and ensure that all his welders passed the applicable code tests.  Any non-standard joint or procedure would have to be tested out before being used to build product.  A private buildier would have to use only the prequalified procedures and joints cited for the application.Boilers are built this way because a faulty weld could kill hundreds rather than just a diver and a few track people.
Reply:"I am just saying that for some reason the requirements for roll bars seem to be made up rather than taken from a higher authority" There is noting made up here!!!!  If the car is not right, it will sit on the trailer. All position, not knowing were you are from click on the link I gave you and give one of them guys a call. I would hate to see you put your heart and soul in all that work, just to have the Inspector tell you "put it on the trailer".One more thing, there is no such thing as a stupid question. I hope this helps.
Reply:Thank you everyone for being very helpful.

Reply:All bars need to have continuous welds. You would not believe how many guys put bars in the car and think the pick up 5mph.....But the fact is, there just not going fast enough to have the cars Inspected, they just need a seat belt and a helmet. Most any of the 110 welders with v rollers and .023wire and 75/25 gas will do the job.I hope this helps.
