How diffucult is it to weld SS tubing? I want to make some fishing rod holders for my boat using 1/2" x .049 wall. I would be using a Miller 135 mig.Millermatic 135Miller Big 40Lincoln 225AC
Reply:most people use aluminum here, but I guess stainless is easier.
Reply:LOL I have an endless supply of stainless steel tubing.Millermatic 135Miller Big 40Lincoln 225AC
Reply:Do you have any 1 1/2" tube? That would be better..
Reply:We only use 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", and once in a while 3/4" .Millermatic 135Miller Big 40Lincoln 225AC
Reply:Hows it going. Most SS steel is readily weldable some alloys are better suited to welding then others. Do you now the alloy number for the metal you plan weld?Another concern when MIG welding ss steel is the kind of shielding gas used. There are argon/ oxygen mixes and argon/ helium/ CO2 mixes. CO2/ argon can be used , but I have never tried it on SS and do not know how well it works. Check with your gas supplier and see if they recommend something. To retain all the corrosion resistance stainless wire within the same family as the base metal should be used.Boy I wish I had an endless supply of the stuff! Taker' easy
Reply:The tubing I use is 316 SS. This endless supply is random lenghts, we make temp. installations and when the project is finished, the tubing is removed and discarded. Straight pieces will be from 1 foot to sometimes 10 foot.Millermatic 135Miller Big 40Lincoln 225AC
Reply:Use a 316L or a 308L The L stands for lower carbon. Durring welding at high temps the carbon ties up the Chromium to for ChromiumCarbide Wich hurts your corrosion resistance. Do not use eny sheilding gas that has Co2 or O2 this will be detrimental. When you go to get the wire ask for gas blended for SS. |
