Here are some pics of a little job I completed recently. It is a piece of equipment from a producer of flavored coffees. The piece that I was working on is the housing and frame from a ribbon blender. It is used to mix all the different flavors into the coffee...and believe me it smells heavenlyIt was completely worn through when I got it. Basically all I did was re-skin the trough with a piece of 14 gage 304 SS with 2B finish. I also reworked the manually actuated rack and pinion gate that is used to empty it.  Other than putting new angles on the top and cleaning it and giving it a paintjob...that was about it. They didn't want to spend a lot of money. The two end plates are cast iron as well as the gate pieces. The pinion gear was missing a bunch of teeth in addition it had been fixed with bronze rod in the past. Rather than waste a bunch of time, it was much easier to burn a new gear from A36 and weld a couple shaft collars on it. The manufacturer, JABEZ BURNS AND SON'S...produces, or used to at least, all manner of coffee roasting equipment. They last forever and just keep getting rebuilt. I have worked on roasters from the 50's and 60's and they're still going strong.Back to the smell...it was out of this world...a combination of vanilla, and hazelnut and cinnamon and just about anything you can imagine that smells good. The concentrate had seeped into the pores of the cast pieces over time and the smell was so strong that it completely permeated the entire shop.I threw the old skin in the scrap bin after I got the info I needed and here we are 3 months later and the bin still smells of vanilla.(very little welding on this project, but I think it's worth posting just the same...just as interesting as, " My first welds with a 110 V machine")Last edited by Tinbasher; 04-13-2008 at 02:06 PM.
Reply:Lucky you most of the jobs i get rank on the oposite end of the smell-o-meter.
Reply:Wait untill you have to play with something from a sewerage treatment plant.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Youve got it all wrong Zap.When you get that dried poo to burning it smells like money.

Reply:Coffee (caffeine) is one my addictions. BUT the cinnamon I could do without. Nothing quite as nice as the smell of coffee. Well there are some things.
Reply:It's quite a nice change of pace when jobs smell nice.  I used to look forward to repairing odds and ends that came from a local cookie factory.  Another nice one was from a company that made cinnamon pine cones.  But after a few days, the smell got old.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Ma'am, can I smell your...Young man! NO... You can not!Oh... must be your feet! Last edited by denrep; 04-13-2008 at 09:11 PM.
Reply:Nice work, but you are killing me.  Must be nice to work on stuff that smells nice for a change.  I spent all week working on a spreader with the axles snatched out from under it.  Only problem was it was loaded with 12 tons of Chicken crap when it happened, and no way to unload it until I got the axles back under it.  Needless to say there was an additional charge for the smell.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:I welded on a machine that separated the hide from the meat on animal hides. That was purely awful.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:You haven't smelled anything until you had to cut and weld on a Muffin Monsterhttp://www.jwce.com/products/videos/Mega_Machines.swfOr a bar screen or a sludge thickenerLast edited by joethemechanic; 04-14-2008 at 11:06 PM.Joewww.CummingsHauling.com
Reply:Joe ive installed several Muffin Monsters cant say ive ever cut or welded on one.Bar screens yeah ive cut and welded on dozens of those.Sludge aint that bad,it smells like money too.Ive rebuilt 5 digestor lids. The smallest was about 28' dia.and the biggest was about 120' dia ,3 of those on same job.Over 2 miles of welding on each one, half of it overhead. If its in a sewer plant ive seen it,done it or swam in it ha ha.Whats really nice is when you cut into a sludge line that cant be pressure relieved with a demo saw. Then you only have like an hour shutdown time so you cant stop cutting.Oh the stories of **** i have.
Reply:I did a big job up at Passaic Valley Sewage a couple of years ago. I replaced a bunch of thickener gearboxes on their Zimpro sludge system. The hardest part was supporting the lids so we could cut the structure loose to get the gearbox out. That required lots and lots of work in the tank. That was a really nasty job. If you think sludge is nasty wet. Think about it being dry and dusty.I have rebuilt tons of macerators and pumps for wastewater. All of it is nasty. But the words "Prevailing Wage Rate" are like music to my earsLast edited by joethemechanic; 04-14-2008 at 11:52 PM.Joewww.CummingsHauling.com
Reply:And I thought paint fumes were bad...I can only imagine month old, pre-digested dinner fumes...
Reply:shortly after katrina i was working about a mile downriver from a poultry warehouse where 2 million pounds of chicken had been festering.  its was at least two months before they got it cleaned out.  it wasn't  bad when we were up wind of it, but when the wind changed direction...
