I need to build up a few wheel assemblies with a unique offset and bolt circle. These are low speed off road wheels. Centers must be salvaged from used wheels. The used centers I'm welding in are difficult to remove cleanly from the donor rims. So fit-up and alignment can be a pain. I thought I would build a jig to see if I could weld the wheels true, without first spinning them to check for run-out and concentricity.  It worked, first finished wheel turned true. Saved lots of time, much easier than trying to, tack weld, spin and  align. I have a few improvements in mind, but it's a start. Enjoy the show!Attachment 13186Last edited by denrep; 08-24-2009 at 09:10 AM.
Reply:I like that simple jig you made for centering the hub and backspacing it. Very quick thinking on your part. Great job!!And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Are those old split rims centers I see? That is cheating Mr.! You can't go around building unobtainium wheels for old trucks like that! I want some!  Just kidding, but I still want some!Edit:- I guess not, I just noticed the word reversed!?! D'OH!Last edited by tanglediver; 10-08-2007 at 12:49 AM.City of L.A. Reply:This is project is alive again!I need to speed things up; too much fumbling on each one of these. I'm going to try to automate a little, starting by building centers with punched holes: Attachment 18149That's my custom layout template and transfer punch on the left.Punching the holes:Attachment 18145Bolting up to a hub, to confirm accuracy of punched bolt circle: Attachment 18146They seem okay.Cutting the chamfer. I may try to do this step with a mag-drill: Attachment 18147If I can buy a cutter that will drill and chamfer in one pass, I may skip the punch and just drill the holes. The red "fire" is reflector tape.I would like to cut the center first, but the punched holes are so close to the edge, I'm afraid the plate would bend. Also don't want to loose the center mark until last. Attachment 18148I'm thinking about poorboy semi-automating the welding.More pictures as I move on.Last edited by denrep; 10-19-2010 at 11:27 PM.
Reply:more details about what they are going on, rockwells?Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Sn0border88,I'm not sure what brand of axles; they're for low speed off road trucks. Not for mudder, or monster trucks, if that's what you're thinking. The bolt pattern is the very common, standard, 6-hole Budd.

Reply:I like the punch press!  NICE.Good workDavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Plasma torch is C-clamped to the upright; hub and plate are rotated.

Reply:The wheels keep churning out, with a few refinements in process. Here's a real split rim; it was cut up for the center. Thought you guys might like a look. Some people call any multi-piece rim, a split rim, that's not accurate. Most  rims that  use a lock ring at the bead, are relatively safe, when handle properly.A true split-rim, has two halves held together by a "C" shaped ring at the center. With split rims, you really are working around dynamite. When you see one of these, -a true split rim- beware:Attachment 18988The rims may look solid from outside, but here's what can lurk underneath: Attachment 18989All that rust was behind the ring!Avoid split rims!
