Reply:haha, yeah.. We knew well before we even started that we would have to take out the wall. That would've been pretty funny to see them roll it to the door and it not fit

Reply:The stuff from Japan is top-notch, but you pay for it. The stuff from China...well, it can be a treasure hunt. Sometimes you can find good quality, but most of the time...not. give me steel from American or European mills any day. Reply:You're probably right, as I can't think of any american-owned mills either. But the mills located in america are still producing good steel; even if they're owned by someone overseas. Reply:That reminds me of building stack-packs. Nice job.I don't know where the owners reside but there is a mill in Mississippi. I used to get steel from a mill in Texas back in the 90's but they may be gone now. My local supplier told us last week he can't even get anything that isn't from China. They wanted to build a mill here but our city fathers are only interested in creating more waitress and maid jobs. Nucor (domestically owned and the largest minimill ((recycled steel)) producer of steel in the world) and United States Steel (largest domestically owned and seventh largest producer in the world based on sales) still have mills running in the US and US producers shipped 9.9% more steel in Feb '08 than they did in Feb '07. That is from the American Iron and Steel Institute. China will eventually have to learn what Japan did. Thirty years ago their steel made China's current product look like real good stuff.Last edited by Jolly Roger; 04-20-2008 at 10:05 PM.Reason: left something outThe difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. Reply:From Tangledivers's link at The Center for Land Use Interpretation : "A team of 300 Chinese workers came to Fontana in 1993 to disassemble it, and ship it to China, where it was reassembled" So that's where the upstart Chinese mills came from!Kaiser Steel - The old Kaiser Steel data books had a picture of a row of Kaiser trucks so loaded with steel, that the doors wouldn't open, looked like the drivers had to climb in and out of the window!Back to "What's Your Opinion?" The Center for Land Use Interpretation?!? I've heard it all now.Maybe they could do a feature on the Gravy Train's stations and home shop!Last edited by denrep; 04-22-2008 at 07:45 AM.
Reply:true enough...but Nucor isn't a real big player in the steel industry. It's like looking at a candle flame held in front of the sun, when you compare Nucor to Mittal-Acelor or one of the other big international conglomerates...I've worked for companies that bought steel from all the big producers, Thyssen-Krupp, Mittal-Arcelor, AK steel, Nucor, US steel, Kawasaki, BaoShin(sp?), WuHan, and others. Over 15 years, I would say that I've seen more consistent quality from the domestic USA, Japanese, and European mills. This seems to be regardless of who owned who, which I attribute to the quality of the people working on the mill floor. You know...the little guys who actually get the work done. None of which has anything to do with Newdirty's pictures of the project he recently finished....
