I finally got my matching gas nozzle and tip from Lincoln.I did several welds and the photos below are about as good as they get from what I think. Some notes.  .083 Mild Steel, .025 Solid wire, Weld Length 3 Inches up.I used a slight push with the gun and I was looking down on the arc and looking right behind the actual arc I was able to see the puddle.  This time I used a less aggressive Z movement almost like left and right then up movement, not to fast just watching the puddle and let it fill. Here are some photos of the weld, the back side and the tips I got form Lincoln.  I would recommend to anyone to get these tips no matter what kind of MIG welding you are doing.  They helped me a lot with visibility. Thanks again for everyone’s input!Mike Attached Images
Reply:doesn't get much better   i don't have a spunky username just what it is, me!
Reply:Thats not a vertical.....   Nice try though.....

Reply:Nice weld! Heat just right  Good and hot!
Reply:Dang Malich, you've got it dialed in!!!That's the 3/8ths nozzle with tapered tip?? You going to stick with that as standard eq?? How about the gas, stay the same flow??
Reply:Robin  Hood, I assure you that is a vertical weld.  Weather you believe it or not is up to you.  Why don't you do an actual vertical weld and let’s take a look at it.Don't be fooled because I laid the weld horizontal to take the photo.MikLast edited by malich; 06-19-2005 at 10:37 PM.
Reply:Sandy,Yes, it is the 3/8ths nozzle and the tip is what Lincoln sold as a match for the nozzle.  I really do not see any reason to go back to the old nozzle.  It is nice to have some extra view and the tips are no more expensive that the standard stuff. As for the gas flow, I left the settings that I used with the original equipment.Mike
Reply:Thanks malich. You're doing great there.  I was just curious if you felt like you had to turn the gas up.
Reply:Malich, If that is a vertical you are doing great....   But it looks like the silicon deposit is all on the down side, with would Indicate that gravity pulled it down, (running flat) The silicon deposit would be on both sides running verital. And I did run some verticals with .030 wire, have a look here..http://old.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=2743
Reply:It really is vertical up.  I do not know why the silicon is on that side, my other vertical up weld has the silicon more evenly distributed to both sides. Can you tell me why your welds look as they do compared to mine?  Do you use a different method of movement for your vertical up welds?Mike
Reply:Mike,I have been asked that question a lot..........   That is just my technique, and it's not hard to master, I can make welds like that all day long and be thinking about what I want to do when I get home, and never miss a beat or bead......    I have never busted a x-ray or mag test, or broke a bend test and I have pushed it to the max at my shop. Here is something for you to try, Take two plates, (3/8" or more) so you can put some heat on it.Bevel the plates and set a gap of say 3/16" or more, with .025 wire you should be fine. Try to bridge that welding vertical and be very careful not to brake the wire off on the back side but keep going building that bridge. Do that for three inches, now on the next three inches put a backing plate over the gap to cover the gap, try to pull the backing plate into the puddle, you will see you need to move the arc in on the plate, Thats why mine look like they do. I just like the look of it.......   and it's solid metal. I can make 7018 like that too, or I can make it look like a wedding band.
Reply:The reason for the silicon being on 1 side of the bead is because you paused more on that side than the other and robin hoods welds are cold and he moves up too fast.. that's why they have a bumpy look
Reply:Mike (malich),What torch are you using, and what are the part numbers to the tip an nozzle?Respectfully,Charles Brown
Reply:Charles,I am using a Lincoln Pro Mig 175.  I don't have my manual handly right now, but I orderd the parts from the part numbers in the back of the welder manual that Lincoln suppilied for the tip and nozzle.Mike
Reply:Guy,The reason robinhoods welds are bumpy is because he is using a figure 8 weave.  This weave is not as common today (probably becasue of difficulty in doing it right), but those he has posted look near textbook perfect.  I hope age isnt a point of sensitivity for Robinhood, but I have an old welding text from 1950 by hobart bros., and this is the weave recommended and shown in a picture for vertical-ups.  I bet Robinhood used that text when he was in school.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:smithboy, You are right..but I'm not that old, but my Instructor in NNSB was, but the short arc got fazed out for Flux Core ( to much wind on the skidways) In fact they fazed it out in the early 80s.  You guys keep trying, you can do it.Hey smithboy, there was a picture here some where that someone else had done, and hes got it down too...  he only made one pass though.
Reply:Yeah,I think its diverguy's in the mig competition thread.  He has a pretty nice vertical up weld to and it looks like he is experimenting with that weave and may just have it.  I will get my old book out and post some of the pictures.  It has maybe 6-8 different weaves for different applications.Like most skilled trades, to decrease production costs and training time, the aesthetics are de-emphasized.  I bet one of the reasons folks ask you about that pattern is that they think it's nice looking, cause it is.  A lack of cordination and an abundance of caffine makes me too jumpy to make aestheticly pleasing welds (solid...yes, pretty...sometimes), but I knows'um when I sees'um.  You dont have to be good musician to appreciate good music. Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:ooooooooooh.. sorry about that Robin Hood i didn't know you were weaving that way
