How can i braze with an o/a torch without heating up the metal so much that it just melts and fuses togetherAlot of the time when i heat the metal to cherry red, and then introduce the braze and the metal starts to meltDo i Put the flame on to the road and let it flow onto the metal or do i keep the flame on to metal and put the rod into the flame??Any techniques and tips that you guys do when you do it?
Reply:When you are brazing correctly, you should have your heat so that you can actually hold the rod constantly into the puddle as you work forward heating the rod and the metal at the same time.  Sounds to me like you are heating your metal to hot before adding the rod.  With brazing remember you are bonding not fusing so the metal does not need to be glowing orange.   A dark red is usually hot enough. Try heating in very small circles until the brass just will flow out onto the base metal.  You will need to heat the metal first at the starting point of your seam before you add the brass then start working forward in a small circular motion heating the rod and base metal as you go.  A good brazing pass will look almost as smooth as a tig weld if done properly.  Just keep at it and I am sure you will get the hang of it.  good luck ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Do you know where i can see some pictures of a proper brazing seam
Reply:I guess with any metal work the key is heat control, a matter of getting the heat and the right amount of heat that is consistant and controlable to the right place. Getting feel for it (which I still struggle with) take a bit of time.
Reply:I posted a repair I did several weeks ago here.http://www.weldingfaq.com/If you have too much heat you will overheat the brazing alloy and get fuming white smoke which is zinc oxide.  All you need is a dull red on your parent metal.  Rub the flux coated rod onto the red surface and it should run like solder.  I prefer adding flux from a can but so much rod is now coated with flux.  The surface should be cleaned with a grinder before you start so that your flux does not have to cut through the heavy oxide layer.
