i need some square tubing so i can start building some table/ carts i was quoted 75$ for 1x1x1/8  24' cut into 6' sections. is this about the norm for most ? i also asked about their sheet metal, 4x8 16gauge sheet was 120 + 15 per cut. now this seems expensive, considering the first place i stopped in said 70$ per sheet and it was either 16 or 14 gauge.
Reply:1x1x 1/8" steel is $22.95 per 24' from Mill metals in Manch, NH.  They are not the cheapest around, but have no lot fees.  I think they charge $1.00/cut.Start a cash account at the metal supply place, & it'll be cheaper.Where are you located?Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:I just bought a bunch of 20' lengths of unpainted mild steel last week at the local steel distributor (Morris Industries south of RIchmond Virginia) - cut to 10' lengths for free:1.5"x1.5"x1/8" angle $17.223"x4.1 channel $53.302"x2"x1/4" angle $44.661"x1/8" square tube $30I picked it up at the steel yard so there was no delivery fee.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
Reply:wow, so i just payed triple what you guys get it for the only thing i could compare prices to was onlinemetals.com and it was same price, no shipping. gonna have to do some more looking im in long island , NY
Reply:I got those prices without any sort of volume discount, just a cash transaction.Reach out to some welders or even some of the more friendly shops like Trailer dealers who use steel.  THose guys have already done the leg work and can shortcut your search.Don't be afraid to drive a bit as well.  I drive 60 miles round trip to get my steel so I just make sure to do it in batches (the last one was a few hundred feet worth).Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
Reply:x2 on the prices quoted by gwiley and weldingmachine.  I'm paying roughly the same here in Houston.  Onlinemetal is expensive....I've bought some stuff from them but not standard shapes in CS.Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor
Reply:I normally pay around $0.68/Lb. The other metal stores are up to $1.67/lb which is a lot. I wont pay more than $1.10 lb if I can. If I order metal through my work, I get it around $0.45/lb.Doing the math....1x1x1/8 is 1.35lb/ft1.35 x 24' = 32.40lbs32.40x $0.45= $14.58So it would cost me $14.58 for 24' at a weight of 32.40lbs.Last edited by oxygen454; 01-25-2011 at 02:15 AM.
Reply:i just paid $1/lf for some 1" x 14ga tubing no charge for one cut..be careful those li vendors are gonna make you pregnant....and 50 cents a foot for 3/8 hotrolled round bar..

Reply:Would the answer, I don't care the customer is paying be appropriate?Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:I try to buy all my materials at the "Usables" department of my local steel scrapper, Padnos Recycling. They buy scrap, sort out the useful stuff, and process on site the remainder, and it all goes out on trains. I can drop appliances and random junk and buy useful stuff within half an hour. Prices are usually about 64 cents per lb, but it can go up depending on where the material was sourced from. They have new steel that is more, and will occasionally get lots from auctions that will vary. It all goes up or down depending on market prices, set at the beginning of the week. Aluminum is more, as is Stainless. I have purchased an aluminum dock there, and paid scrap price, which was .80/lb at the time, IIRC. It was a pretty sweet deal.
Reply:I do the same as "dentedvw".  Padnos is a great place to get steel in the Lansing area.  I'm located in Charlotte, so it's relatively close.  Last time I went to the "usables" area I paid .60 cents a pound for nice steel that they got from an auction.
Reply:stopped by another local place today was quoted the same for the 1x1, thinking about a table i want to build i asked for 2'x3' 1/4" ... 90$
Reply:Have you guys tried any local fab shops? Sometimes there is great scores there.

Reply:Ya I have seen guys get the run around. I think its all in how you talk to them. If you speak there language then they might take people more seriously. (sometimes) I had a local steel supplier try to give me the run around, I changed his attitude pretty quick.Sometimes feeding them some bull$hit will get you farther too. Tell them you want to price out some steel for a small project. Then mention something along the lines of a upcoming project that you are going to do that will require a lot more steel. When they see a potential client, they seem to lower there prices.Last edited by oxygen454; 01-26-2011 at 11:02 PM.

Reply:Good deal on the cuts. They sometimes charge 5 bucks or more a cut. Crazy. Just go in there knowing what kind of product you need and you should be fine.
Reply:Hey SEAR  I'm on LI also, where did you find that steel? My last local supplier is no longer around and I'm looking for another place. Every time I look around another place is gone. I used to carry a phone book in my truck but that doesn't help any more, most of the places don't last as long as the book.

Reply:That is a good point, never really thought about it in that sense. I have always worked for steel shops so I usually had access to steel.
Reply:I get a lot of tire kickers,  and with the price of scrap i get maybe 5 guys a day wanting to haul away the scrap for free.   apparently they think im dumb and don't know its worth 300+ a ton.  the biggest problem is that the F'ers have been getting into my yard and robbing outta my short rack.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.

Reply:You could also try www.metaldepot. Onlinemetal looks to be a place to buy small pieces. Put your entire order on metaldepot and you can get a price straight to your door.BTW, have never used them personaly. Local yard quoted $$$ for 3" channel. I told them I wanted to make a rack out of it, not send it to collage.
Reply:I paid $9 for 1"x1"x20' 16 gauge stick and they cut them in half. It's a small local shop. IMS wanted $20 for the same stick.BillMillermatic 2111960 Ford Ranchero1975 Dodge B200

Reply:Originally Posted by DualieI refuse to buy anything from alco for a couple or reasons.  One is they sell mostly secondarys that are more pain to workwith than they save in costs.   Second is they were fabricating up in their mare island facility and undercutting everyones prices on structural and making them outta secondary and scrap beams with out certs.
