Reply:Wow...scale is kinda lost on stuff that big...I know someone has to build that stuff, but it's always impressive when you ACTUALLY see stuff like that.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:That is awsome... i used to love working on big rigs and heavy equipment cause all that was big... but that is just CRAZY... gives ya an idea on how big that stuff really is.
Reply:Very nice thanks for the picts. What ship yard did you work at or did you make those and ship them out? My father used to work at Newport News, I can still remeber the props for the Nimitz. Those are BIG props, makes these look like outboard motor props.
Reply:I am suprised that it is acceptable to show pictures like that of the ship, I know they throw you under the brig for taking ppictures of the Submarine propsare those babies variable pitch?I heard a rumor that the bearings the prop shafts run in that go through the hullare so expensive that the navy leases them and does not own them outright?I would hate to be the one to polish that prop.insert thoughtful quote from someone else2000 Thermal Arc 300GTSW 3.5 hours1946 Monarch 20 x 54 Lathe1998 Supermax 10x54 Mill2004 Haco Atlantic 1/2" Capacity Lasernot mine but i get to play with it
Reply:Sorry those props are the wrong pitch to fit my boat.....My father was welding foreman at a shipyard and I remember props that size and walking under ships that large in dry dock. A really eerie feeling.I earned great respect for the craftsman that work on ships. There is nothing square on a ship so it requires real skill to get it right.Awesome work.....Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...

Reply:What you do in a "No Wake Zone"?Good judgement comes from experience.Experience comes from bad judgement.
Reply:My father was one of the navy's supervisors of shipbuilding at Newport News when they built the USS Nimitz. We were watching a program on the building of the USS Ronald Reagan on cable when he was up for Christmas. He commented that the propshafts were the limiting factor on speed on that ship. Max speed at trials was determined not by the reactors, turbines or props, but by the strength of the shafts. They had strain gauges to measure the stress on the shafts and they stoped well below the reactor limits. The turbines are designed to exceed the reactor limits by at least 50%.Thats got to be a lot of torque to twist a shaft that looks to be bigger than 6-8' in diameter.
Reply:d morgan: huh, at first I thought you were wrong (I thought the most efficient prime mover in the world was a diesel), but it appears if you consider the combined cycle of a gas turbine + steam turbine, turbines are more efficient:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W%C3%A4...6-C#Efficiency
Reply:Turbines might be more efficient, but I bet they ain't no more impressive to look at.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:the ship yard is in bath maine the co. is rolls royce in mass.they are turbine engines 2 each 55,000 hpand if i had a pic. or even talk about a sub props.i would be in jail
Reply:I don't need no picture of a sub screw. I got it firmly planted in long term memory.
