My next project will be a gasoline locker.  I want an outside storage locker for my gasoline cans.  I made a rough drawing of what I am planning and I would like some input or suggestions from the weldingweb community. I'm planning on using 1/8 inch x 1 inch x 1 inch angle for the frame and 16 gauge expanded metal for the sides and shelves.  I've estimated that I will need about 76 feet of angle and 3 sheets of expanded metal.  I'm not sure about what kind of hinges I'll need for the doors and what kind of locking mechanism I'll need.  Do the doors need to lock at both the top and the bottom, or will a simple hasp in the middle be enough.I'll probably be buying the metal next Wednesday and beginning this project.  I'll post pictures of the various stages and of the welds.  I know y'all like to see the welds.

Reply:I would put a center post in for the doors to lock up to...ie ...1x1x -100 wall sq tube.are your making this to keep thieves out?...If your are, the frame for your doors will have to be heavier than 1x1x 1/8Hinges...you can use the rod and pipe hinge
Reply:Majorjc...what I mean by the center post...you can shut your left door...then your right and you can lock the top and the bottom corners with just 1 lock...but i need to know how bullet proof you need this....Or if It,s just a storage cab to keep your gas cans In order ...then you can simply have a 1 lock In the center of the doorsCheersGearsLast edited by Gearjam; 03-19-2008 at 05:13 PM.

Reply:Hello Majorjc:  How is this project comming along?  I see you were planning on using expanded steel for walls - so this is going to be a very well ventilated cabinet.I want to do something similar and have been looking at the safety equipment catalogs for ideas.  But all the cabinets for gasoline (flammable liquids) storage are double-walled solid sheet of unspecified gauge, 1.5" space between the walls, with some sort of vent system (2" pipe fittings?) with flame arrestors in the vents.  The vents are not pictured in any of the catalogs so I can't see how they work.  These commercial cabinets are spec'd as NFPA certified "Explosion proof" (yeah, right!) and meet national fire codes.Any comments from yourself or others would be helpful and appreciated!-MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:I used a salvaged Hoffman electrical panel.  Good ventilation, weather seal on the door, nice heavy paint inside & out that never rusted in the elements, and it even had a lock hasp.  Check for electrical salvage dealers for varoius size cabinets.  They're junking these things all the time.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
