soldering is not welding
Reply:I don't see how you can say that. Brazing is the same as soldering, just done at a higher temp w/ a different metal. Reply:weldingOne entry found.weld[1,verb]Main Entry:    1weld Pronunciation:    \ˈweld\ Function:    verb intransitive verb: to become or be capable of being weldedtransitive verb1 a: to unite (metallic parts) by heating and allowing the metals to flow together or by hammering or compressing with or without previous heatingJohn -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Depends on where you are, too.In the South Pacific, even in English, all three processes are commonly referred to as "welding."In Spanish, the verb soldar also covers all three processes. But in technical English as I've most often encountered, soldering is joining with a low-melting-point filler without melting the parts being joined.  Brazing (also called silver soldering) is the same process using a filler that melts above 800* F.  Welding is melting the two parts together, with or without additional filler. But there are also variations of all of the above, particularly brazing and welding.  There's even a braze welding process used in some production lines.  But this is all from memory, so who knows?

Reply:Philosophical question of the day...How do you join two pieces of solder, glasshoppa? by soldering or welding? When you can take the welding rod from my hand...you will be the master...Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Looks to me like joining metal is the common denominator here folks. You can get as technical as you want but both processes still join metal.  Main Entry:    1sol·der Pronunciation:    \ˈsä-dər, ˈsȯ-, British also ˈsäl-dər, ˈsōl-\ Function:    noun Etymology:    Middle English soudure, from Anglo-French, from souder to solder, from Latin solidare to make solid, from solidus solidDate:    14th century1: a metal or metallic alloy used when melted to join metallic surfacesJohn -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:Mercury welding. Wouldn't fancy trying a 6G!IF oxidation were the only thing preventing metals being welded simply by touching them together all that would be needed is an inert atmosphere- used all the time when welding exotics with normal arc welding gearSomethings missing from the explanation. While i'd like to think it's something like vodka i'd imagine it's something more akin to friction welding
Reply:You have this much time to argue whats welding and whats not welding.
Reply:Can we hurry up and get this arguement over with so we can move on to a much more important topic... how to pronounce potato?Tim

Reply:Naaaaa..Just another opinion.Thats all..But why is it that newbees here are called Solderers when it don't apply to welding?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Originally Posted by 737mechanicFirst of all zap didn't say the true definition of soldering was actually welding. All he said was soldering is concidered welding in his book and if what he means is what I think he means then all he is saying is soldering is close enough to welding to be called welding. Why people can't just read between the lines anymore amazes me. Why a thread was started over this is almost funny, of course I am sure the guy that started the thread is probably a little kid that learned something and wanted to share his new found knowledge.
Reply:Gotta love it, Welding Web getting philosophical.  To weld or not to weld,  that is that question.....
