I need to build 2 steel frames to make doors for a lean-to. They will be covered with the 3/8" 4x8 exterior wood siding to match the rest of the building. The overall dimensions of the opening are 139" wide X 83 " tall.I'm thinking 1" square 3/16" thick material will be sufficient. I plan on putting an angled piece from the top corner (hinge side) to the bottom corner and then another piece where each seam is to attach the siding. Does this sound sufficient? Thanks!
Reply:What you call 3/16ths will probably be called 188 wall when you go to buy it. Either that or 180 wall, but in any case that certainly an odd size (1"x.188"). If you plan on making two doors for the one opening then they'll be just shy of a 6' by 7' door each. The most common practice for that would be 2 inch box and probably 120 wall, or 180 to 188 if you feel like you really need it. No need to make the door so heavy you can't keep it hung straight. Unless they are on rollers that weight is there twenty four seven and will eventually take their toll on whatever they are hung to. Then do you diagonals.
Reply:wicrules, I just did that today. I used 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x .120 and it was stout as heck. Remember your plywood is gonna hold it sq. so you really don't need diag. support
Reply:Thanks! I'll have to see what my supply house carries. They are pretty small and I can't always get what I want. |
