It's 1" s.s. pipe connected to perforated gage s.s.(approx 16ga with 1/8" holes running at 600 big ones per sheet).  On a side note, I worked for a place with a cnc punch that made their own sheets.  When they started punching some of the thicker s.s. materials, you could feel your teeth coming loose.  And I was a good 50' away from the machines.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:I was going to say new fangled butter churn, but that doesn't have anything to do with wine, so yeah looks like a grape smasher, or maybe a filter for when they empty the tanks.

Reply:Pretty close guesses.   While the grapes are breaking down in open top tanks, they form a crust on the top which has to be broken up twice a day.  So the longer ones are for taller tanks with an extra handle for better stability.All I know is that after 5000 holes being punched in the stainless, you started to resent the machines.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:The actual process is called punching the cap. The reason the grapes, and grape skins float to the surface is because of the process of carbonic maceration.
