I ordered a couple Victor propane cutting tips from Ram Welding Supply. I was going to put them on today. But they are to big to fit the torch. I have the victor deluxe super range II. The book shows that it can use GPN type propane tips. But it doesn't come close to fitting.I bought the o-gpn type tips. On Rams website I also noticed they have 2 different types of gpn tips. The o-gpn and 0-3-gpn. Would I need to get the o-3-gpn tips? I have never used propane for cutting before so I have no idea what I need. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.
Reply:mike, let me know what you find out as im interested in running the propane myself.   ThanksCHRIS
Reply:I started using propane about two years ago.  I really like it.  I have a MECO Weldmaster torch with a 00 propane tip.  With that tip I can easily cut through 1/4 inch.  I have cut 3/4 inch wrought iron with it and it was slow.  I don't know if it was slow because it was wrought iron or because of the tip size.  I switched over a couple of years ago because there was a shortage of acetylene.  Something about not being able to get the ingredient calcium carbide from Canada. I have not missed acetylene.  Propane is much cleaner burning.  It is a little harder to light.  A little tougher to find the neutral flame.  However, all will be overcome after using it a few times.  It is much more stable than acetylene and you don't have to guess how much is left, just weigh the tank.  Acetylene volume tends to vary with the temperature.   I use a 20 pound cylinder with my acetylene regulator attached.  20 pounds out last more than 5 80cf acetylene.  I get 20 lbs propane for $12.  I think I used to pay 23 for 80cf acetylene.  One thing to be aware of is if you use a large volume of propane in a short amount of time, then the tank will freeze.  I have never had this problem while using propane for cutting or brazing, however I have had this problem when I attached a large forge burner to a 20 lb tank.
Reply:wow tap,  good info,  what about the difference in torch, tips, regs, ect?   are the universal, any or do i need all new set up?chris
Reply:chris If you are going to cut, then you need a propane cutting tip.  It is a two part tip with about twice the number of preheat holes as a standard acetylene cutting tip.  Welding/brazing tips are the same. I don't know about rosebuds.  It is suggested that you get new hoses.  Apparently propane causes standard acetylene hose to deteriorate.  I did not change the hose when I swiched to porpane, I haven't notice any problems.  The regulator is the same also.
Reply:Tap, your saying the regs, the hose itself and the torch body are the same acetylene or prop only the tip is differnt?  I do appreciate that. I may go ahead and shoot for that.  I hated to venture off from what I know but golly gee it sure is expensive.  ThanksCHRIS
