Reply:Get yourself some Lincoln 1/16 71 Elite. You will like that for all your plate work after you try it.

Reply:Hello 450guy,If youre welding flat or overhead fillet welds or flat groove welds, indoors (no wind) try Hobart Quatum Arc D2 wire with 95/5 shield gas. (95%Argon/5%Oxygen) or 98/2 (Argon/CO2) For .045 try 25.5 to 26.5 volts, I cant be spot on with the wire speed, we use old POS LN-7 feeders, best I can say is adjust the wire speed so you have a nice, well defined arc cone and a very slight crackling sound. Preheat the metal a little, maybe 200 degrees surface temp, depending on the size of the parts. CLEAN ALL THE SCALE FROM THE WELD ZONE.Yes, grind the weld zones to bright metal. Believe me, its not as bad as it sounds. Lots of guys cry about grinding, but if you leave your purse and makeup bag in the car , get a good 9 grinder, a decent type 28 stone, and just get it done, its over before you know it.I found a picture to post with this. It is of a small weldment, the horizontal plate is ½ A36 (the one thats edge on) and the vertical plate is 1T1. It is welded with Hobart Quantum Arc D2 .045 ER80 S6 with 95/5 shield gas. The scale was ground from the weld zones before welding, after welding no sanding or scraping, just cleaned with a cup brush on a 4-1/2 grinder. As a post script note; I did not intend to offend any of the talented young women on this forum with the above purse comment
