These is off a zero turn lawnmower.  There were big needle bearings in the wheels.  One grease fitting was missing and the other one had never been used.I built a wall up the outside just laying beads across the gap starting where it was the smallest moving up.  Once theat was done, I laid it flat and filled in the rest from the other side.  Its almost or 1/4" thick. I put the bolt in the positioner and built that up too.  For grins I ran a tap over it.  the nut doesn't go on that far, but........I cleaned up the holes using the die grinder. Then ground it flush with the 4 1/2" mikita.Arcmaster 185, turned all the way up and used the foot pedal.  No idea how many amps. 1/16 and 1/8" S-2 filler.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:WOW, I cry abuse!! Again, thanks for the pics. That would never happen in my 'well maintained' world.  FWIW: since welds ruin my files, I'd never run a die over a weld unless I had to. I read long ago that there are parts of welds that get 'file hard'. And I have several junk files, confirming the theory. 9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Reply:Guys thinking, "Oh great, just when I had a perfect excuse!" "Well now the mowers fixed, git yer butt back in that seat and CUT THE GRASS!!" Nice repair David!  City of L.A. Reply:Looks good David. On thinner metal with a wallowed hole I just weld a washer over the hole. But with 1/4" I would have done what you did. It might not have looked that good, but.......
Reply:what? It looks like that would have been good till the end of the season! Wounder how many hours it takes to do that?  What model is that on?  (making me want to go check my grease fittings on the Gravely 260Z)Me!
Reply:Another nice repair but doesn't it just underline how a little maintenance can go a long way. Everyone is running short of time and put stuff like the little jobs off until next time and then they repeat it and then eventually we repair it. If it had gone to the dealer, there'd have been a list of new parts to fit, until the bill was large enough to give them an excuse to try and sell a new machine.Something like:New Axle, new nuts, washers, bearings grease fittings and gun and grease (to be on the safe side - you understand), new wheel (we really should replace those in pairs, sir) then (I'm not sure we can still get those, they're getting old/hard to get,out of stock/discontinued), the usual "consumables" (rags) and the latest I've seen is an "environmental disposal fee" (putting the rags in the dumpster). Leading up to the suggestion:" Had you thought of updating to the latest technology?" Yes, that's right, where we use a sharp piece of steel moving fast enough to cut the blades of grass it hits."One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for."
