Does anyone know if there is any advantage to using MIG wire for filler when using TIG?  I read in a book that this can be done, but I'm not sure what the advantage would be if any - the book didn't say.  Also, does anyone have a book they would recommend for someone self-teaching TIG?  The books I have merely introduce the process and do not get into subjects such as the evaluation of welds or joining different thickness materials etc and so fourth.  I worked with a guy when I was on ship that introduced me to welding and TIG, but I no longer have him available to help me so jarring my memory with a book is the next best thing.  Thanks for the help!
Reply:I have use mig (Solid) wire for o/a welding.  Because of its small diameter you can lay down a small bead.  However for close fit up and not critical joints, I simply start a puddle without wire and weld the parts together.  I use the wire to fill if I blow holes.  Weld requries no cleanup.  The wire can be a pain to keep straight, however.   Would not use  Mig wire to start learning. Ironically, I am in the process of closing the seams in 150 tubular rings using this very method.  I think the point of the book was to point out that mig Solid wire and rod can be used interchangablly.
Reply:MIG water isn't all that pure, you will get a better bead with a good TIG wire.Owner of Welding Wiki,The free wiki based resource for weldor's around the world.http://www.weldingwiki.comWe have cookies!
Reply:There shouldn't be any difference in purity between TIG wire and MIG wire.  As long as the filler meets AWS specifications, it should be fine.  The only problem with MIG wire is that it's a pain to use and would probably be frustrating to a beginner.-Heath
Reply:Our good friend smithboy made a suggestion in a thread some time back..  Ive taken up on this and it works great.  You can take the mig wire,  put like two to three thickness together, one end in the vise, one end in the drill motor.   Be gentle now,  braid the wiire up.   Basically the solid wire and the tig wire are the same. ER70S-6 is the same whether its on a roll or cut length.  ER70S-3 is the same whether its on a rolly or cut length.  Cut length is the term used for tig wire.   Flux core wouldnt work good for tig though.  Also RG wire...rod gas, its for oxy fuel and no good for electric welding.   There are arc stablilzers and other things in the ER wires that make it appropriate for electric processes.  Incidently, a bare steel wire coat hanger is basically if not exactly the same as a bare metal RG45 oxy fuel rod.IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:I use MIG wire for fine welds when I don't have any small diameter tig rid. Works like a charm. As halbritt stated, as long as it meets AWS standards, it should be fine. As for a book, I bought Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Handbook by William H. Monnick about 5 years ago and I still reference it quite often. I don recommend it, but you may want to check a local bookstore and thumb through it before buying it to see if it is what you are looking for. If you type in this title in Amazon.com, you will see other books that may be of interest.
Reply:Miller welding has a number of welding documents for download.  Here's a link to their TIG Handbook, which may be of some assistance:http://www.millerwelds.com/education/TIGhandbook/
