Reply:did this once years ago, one of my first jobs, a railing in a friends of a friend house..i still feel bad about it )you can clean it but it will take some time , First of all make sure u have an ss wire brush, but DON'T use it yet, get some scotchbrite and clean the surface with it, then wash with water. wipe clean and put pickling paste over (as Dave recommended), if possible left the acid overnight then wash with water again, now just to be sure you got all the carbon steel out use a flap disc 120grit then resurface with the SS wirebrush.Just so you know, SS will rust if you hit it with a hammer or cut it with something used on carbon steel before.--------------------------------------------------------------www.becmotors.nlyup, I quit welding.. joined welder anonymous
Reply:ive noticed this happen in school wheere im making a charcoal grill from an old stainless keg, though it was just carbide precipitation but after reading this i have total new ideas! WeldingWeb forum kicks ***!
Reply:Thanks for the info guys. Do you think I could soda blast the rusted areas?
Reply:Do not use a wire wheel. Even ss wire wheels can leave iron particles. Scotchbrite is the best for finishing stainless. In your case I would recommend a paint removing disc, and be sure to work methodically to remove the entire surface that has been contaminated.Last edited by fortyonethirty; 03-04-2011 at 11:29 PM.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
