Ok guys I went and picked it up.  Got there and it did have a coffee can over the exhaust, however nature had it's way with the coffee can and it looks like water has been getting into the exhaust and therefore the engine.  Tried turning it over with the crank and it wouldn't budge.  Guy felt bad and said I could have it for 200 if I wanted it.  Heck I would have still bought it for 300 but he offered and I was not going to argue the point.  Put some air in the tires, hooked it up the truck and drove the 100 miles back home.  Towed fine. From the serial number it looks to be a 1965 modelI figure best case scenario:  I dissassemble the motor, free it up and reassemble (not counting on this)Somewhat ok scenario: I disassemble, free it up, hone the cylinders, new rings, a few parts here and there and reassembleWorst case: Salvage what parts I can and find another usable block.  Either way I am commited to getting this thing going.  What do you guys think?  Any suggestions?
Reply:damn why cant i find any deals like this in texas, good luck with it, it actually looks pretty clean, how about i give you double your money back for it and pay for the ride to texas
Reply:Appreciate the offer!  But this is starting to feel like one of those money sucking projects that I can never pass up!
Reply:Thats at least a grand in Texas, 1500+ around houston right now.I've been all over looking for a machine the last few weeks - nada

Reply:In that second picture it looks like the frame of the trailer is barely hanging together (right behind what looks to be the jack). I would definitely look into that before taking it down the road again. How does anyone find these machines for $200? That is unheard of around here. I would say you got a deal, hopefully you can get it running with minimal cost . Reply:KROIL IS your friend ! you got a hell of a deal where in nor cal are you at ?
Reply:Kroil is fairly expensive, some people use ATF mixed 50 / 50 with either MEK, acetone, kerosene, or turpentine. ATF being the key ingredient! Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:A neighbour has had luck pouring diesel fuel into siezed cylinders and letting them sit for a day or two. Do this 3 or 4 times...seems to loosen them up. I've never had to do it myself, so I don't know how diesel compares to any of the other products out there...Andrew
Reply:Take a look out front - I think the cops just pulled up!What everybody else has stated thus far regarding getting it freed up.  You may need to pull the side cover off to access the lifters/valve springs to make sure they're working free once you get it turning over.  A little WD-40 / PB Blaster / (pick your weapon) on the valve stems while working them up and down does the trick.Keep us posted on your progress and you sure got yourself a steal of deal there and can afford to put several hundred $$ in it and still get your money plus back.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:you can get a gasket set pretty cheap.. it probably not a must but i will give piece of mind and give a chance to clean it up real well. i got an old shorty about 6 months ago and went through the gasket kit in about a week of after work tinkering it was nice to be able to wire wheel the valves and sand blast all the carbon out of the head. i painted it while i was at it. the hardest part of the motor assembly is the mag (which im still working on)  have fun with it. it is nice not needing it to make $ everyday so take your time.
Reply:CEP, Hillbillyfab:    I looked all over for Kroil, but it must be evil according to California so no luck.  I did buy a couple quarts of Marvel Mystery Oil and will start with that.  If this thing is anything like the flathead in my Ford 9n, they are pretty simple to work on.  Will keep you all updated on progress.wnywelder:  Yeah the front tongue is twisted pretty good, but the welds looked solid.  It towed fine home.  It's not moving from where it's at until shes done so no sweat.   As far as how I found this deal, all I have to say is that prior to this I was ALWAYS the guy that JUST missed the amazing deal.   I was tired of hearing "The guy that called just before you got it".  I wanted to find 'that guy' and punch him in the neck.  I guess that even a blind squirrel can find a nut every once in a while.  In this particular case the guy just did not really know what he had, and I wasn't there to educate him. Grandma came out and talked to me how her late husband used it on the farm until they parked it when he passed. I was there to pay him what he asked and if he was knocking a 100.00 off to close the deal that was ok too!  bravofab:  thanks I am located in Anderson, but I found the welder about 100 miles south of here,  It was 12 miles east of Chico, in a small area called Forest Ranch.duaneb55:  Great advice duane I appreciate your input here. From other threads I have read you know a lot about these beasts.  I look forward to everyones guidance as I restore this.
Reply:I have a Red Face split panel soaking in Kroils right now. I haven't made up my mind if I'm going to restore it, or part it out, and rebuild the engine for a backup. I have too many welders now. Decisions, decisions.   Attached ImagesLast edited by CEP; 03-06-2011 at 03:40 PM.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:jbyrd - http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/cid=0...l/search=kroilor http://www.midwayusa.com/Search/#kro..._1-2-4_8-16-32Brownells and midway are both gun parts/accessories suppliers but they always have kroil in stock, it is a staple in most benchrest shooters boxes and several other enlightened shooters. You can swab a barrel with it, let it set a few minutes, and wipe it out - no scrubbing - and it will be clean as cut.  too clean to shoot actually, you have to foul it with a couple shots before it will settle down.CEP - you ought to part it out - intact - to Texas where we are severely deprived. For example - I have two hands and NO old lincons anymore (except the electric motor converted monster sae400 THING that everyone is afraid of)
Reply:Well I took the head off and the manifold.  To be honest I was expecting worse.  First cylinder full of water, other three empty.  Sucked the water out of the cylinder and it cleaned up pretty good.  Still wont turn over. Took off the side over and sprayed all the valves with PB blaster.  Cylinders currently soaking in Marvel.CEP:  What is your technique for bumping these things over?  Do you just turn the hand crank?  Or do you removed the oil pan and try and tap the pistons in the direction of travel?  The first cylinder is on the upstroke.  Here are some pictures, because we all like those more than words...Heres my youngest son with the welder and holding mom's daily driver...
Reply:Diesel fuel in the cyclinders. Let set. Rotate counter clockwise.
Reply:Did you drain the Oil? ... was there water in it? i would drain off the oil and put a gallon of diesel fuel in the the crank case for now. i wouldnt drop the oil pan unless you have to. you might want to give it a day or two to soak-in and maybe even put a heater on it to warm it up  a bit and if she dont turn over then make a new crank handle  you can put a cheater bar on or better yet stand on the crank.
Reply:You can use the hand crank, or a 1 5/8 inch socket or wrench on the armature shaft at the exciter. Don't use a pipe wrench!  If everything goes well, at least replace the valve springs, $9.00 for a full set at you local Napa store. Reply:Since you are down to the piston tops you can do what antique car buffs do.  Make a block of wood to fit the bore and tap it with a sledge hammer.  Is much less force than the fire in the hole creates when the engine is running.Gordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."

Reply:Ah ha!  Got it.  Thanks.  Yeah I definetely do not want that.  It gets to about 115 here in the summer.
Reply:Is there a way to remove the engine from the frame and leave the generator behind?  Everything I have read leads me to believe I need to disassemble the generator and remove it from the frame before being able to remove the engine.  Thanks guys.
