I built this a while ago.  Today I was at the customer and took some pics of it complete. Here is the thread of the original build.  http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=19253Here are a few pics of the completed project.  The Idea was to make it indestructible.Bar holder that they can't loose  Bar is solid stock.  65 lbs.My dad heated and bent the footSpindle welded to the frame.Light guards.  1/4" X 2".   I hope they can't rip these off.David Last edited by David R; 06-22-2008 at 05:16 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:We had one just like it in our shop awhile back. I said to myself, "Hey look, it's David's trailer!" City of L.A. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore."Job 28:1,2Lincoln, Miller, Victor & ISV BibleDanny
Reply:Nice job.But -nothing- is indestructible. And good thing that cross-bar is solid, because it is not only holding up the wire/cable spools but also reacting the bending of that weight trying to pull the uprights 'in'.65 lbs?  That's only 1-1/8 solid if the bar is 5 feet long (actually 67.5 lbs).
Reply:I paid for 65 lbs....Maybe it was $65.00?    Its 2". X 71"  I never touched it, It was when I had the hernia.  I had  my son trim it to length and he put it on the trailer.  Any i have seen with pipe bend.  There is no suspension except the tires and they are inflated to max.   I think the tires have almost a 2,000 lb rating each.  48' of square tubing weighed 300 lbs and I used all but a couple of feet.  The two uprights lean in an inch and a quarter from the bottom to top.  72" bottom, 70 3/4 top.....Ooops.Last edited by David R; 06-23-2008 at 05:24 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Linemen can tear up anything. I do work for the phone co. and local power co. and what they can break is just amazing. You would think they would have to do it on purpose.
Reply:Oops, I forgot, That's a nice looking trailer. If they break it, they did it on purpose because it looks well built to me.

Reply:I have built them out of 1/8" wall tubing, 3/16" and 1/4".  3/16" is big enough, but ......The ones out of 1/8" didn't last long, the steel was free from the company I was working for at the time.  SO they asked me to use it.  This was for a cable company.  They drag em through the ditch, run over stuff, and generally abuse them.I put the bar keepers on like that because the cable company would loose the pins and use a piece of strand.  The strand would hang down and cut the tires.  Lights are not required on a trailer like that in this state, so I wanted them to be indestructible.  You could pick up the trailer by the light guards. Thanks for the compliments.  Customer likes it too.    See the lock on the safety chains?  I was looking at the picture, what is to stop them (thief) from just pulling the wire off the reels?I painted it with a brush, 2 coats primer and 2 coats allis chalmers orange with hardener in it from Tractor supply.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:correction due to calculation error on my part (r2 vs D2 and pi vs pi/4, blah, blah, blah):2" x 71" solid steel round bar = 63 lbsAnd suggestion for future units:  move the gussets (the horizontal ones) slightly farther away from the corners they are reinforcing.  More strength that way.  How far?  I'd say at least far enough that you can get a weld into the 'inside' joint(s).  Seals the joint/seam and completes the weld all the way around the square tube.  Alternate 'fix' for those existing 'tight' small gussets would be a piece of plate over the top of the gusset area to cap it all off.  See the pic.The orange color looks nice, too.  Kind of 'safety' industrial and all. Reply:I see your point.....There are 2 more gussets 36" out from those attached to the same pieces of tubing on both ends. The weakest point of the trailer is from the hitch to 4' back.   Never had one bend there. No plates needed.  I "fixed" a few of the weaker ones and ones others built.  If I had to plate them, they just broke again and eventually got scrapped.  That is how I got my first welding positioner.I'll find a pic.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
