I havent stick welded in close to 30 years and hadnt really planed on buying one until I found this guy that wants to sell one for $80.00,I havent seen it yet but he says its in great shape and was purchased new in 1980 and has been inside in storage since 1986. Are these older machines worth buying and is there anything to look for when I see it tommorrow?
Reply:,,,,,,,,,,And where did you say it was at? Must of missed that.
Reply:Sure. It won't be as versatile, but you will be able to do most every weld you want to do. 6011 is the most common electrode used by the hobbyist, it is actually designed to be welded with AC. There are some newer AC rods including a version of 7018 which is what most structural welds are done with. That covers your high strength end. I believe 308L stainless filler can be AC welded as well. You wont be able to weld with my favorite, 6010, but 6011 works just as well but with a little more splatter.
Reply:For $80.00 how could you lose, eh? Rotate the clicker switch to check for gumming up, that's not anything serious but might be a talking point. Look for cracking in the cabling. You don't want to have to invest a lot in new cables. Other than that a wonderfull lil machine in anybodys arsenal.
Reply:well , I picked up this hardly used welder with a case of 7018 and 2 boxs of other rods and a fancy electrod holder and cool grounding clamps still in thier boxs all for $75.00. He told me as im loading up the welder if you want you can have all that other welding stuff in those drawers if you want it . |
