I was working on a project today where I got to practice a few short verticle ups and thought they look "fairly good" so I snapped a pic with the cell phone. Wish I had my camera with me to get a closer view, but this is what I got.I was welding 1/4 plate to 3/8" plate with my Millermatic 180, voltage dial on 7.5 and wire speed on 55. My verticle ups always have a sort of "welt" up  the center which I can't get to "flatten out". Opinions please, anything I can try different on the next attempt? Attached Images
Reply:Try doing a side to side weave and stay in the toes for a second then jump across the root to the other toe and stay in that one for a second working your way up in a zigzag weave pattern.
Reply:To get a small Mig weld I think you need to set the machine properly. Get the correct stick out, gun angle, and travel speed. Then just drag the gun up.I don't have a good Mig weld picture, but here is a 1/16 inch NR-233 vertical up on 1/2 inch plate. No side to side, no weave, just drug it straight up. Reply:Use an inverted vee motion and concentrate at spending most of your time on each side.  In the example shown too much time was spent in the center.  Also keep your vertical progression going.  If you stay at one level too long the puddle grows and you lose control.
