I am familiar with mig welding but my new job is going to require me to run stick. I need to know what the basics and techniques are. Also rods? Sizes? Purpose? I weld beautifully with migs. Is there a very great difference, and is it possible to jump right in?Thanks
Reply:me thinkith your gonna find out why they call it "stick" welding... there is many many diffrent alloy rods in many sizes out theredepends on what your doing...what will you be doing?...zap!
Reply:I will mainly be doing structural welding out on drilling rigs
Reply:I will be running both mig and tig
Reply:mig tig and stick man your gonna be busy...zap!
Reply:My wild guess is that if you aren't familiar with stick, and they hired you knowing this, then they must have some training in mind.
Reply:well yes the guy knows that I have no stick experience. But he wants me to take a test with stick. Also I will only be running mig and stick. I just want to know if I can pass the test and how.
Reply:isnt tig arc welding?
Reply:tig or heli-arc welding uses a shielding gas (argon)and a tungsten electrode and you manually add filler metal "stick"or arc welding is with a stick electrode, like a 6010 or 7018 electrode and no shielding gas..the flux of the electrode shields the filler metal from contaminationOwner - Certified Welding & Fabrication / 22yrs in businessSteamboat Springs, Co(970) 879-5491AWS structural shopHMI 70t iron worker2 field trucks specailizing in structural steel, aluminum and stainless steel
Reply:Howdy Howdy! What kind of IH ya got?  I have 3 scout II's in various states of disrepair... loving disrepair...  What have you done with yours?  I cut and turned the front axle for CV shaft and 4 deg caster, then did a spring over axle lift and reverse shackle setup.  The bodies are rusting away here in the great northwet... am thinking about fixing them up some more, but it's either time or money... currently, have niether.  But my tooling is improving.  Soon I'll have them the way I want.  Some pics of your rig would be cool.  Brian Lee  Sparkeee27      as far as the Stick welding, get a few days practice, say with about 50 lbs of rods, andyou should be pretty well versed on the simple stick stuff.  The techniques take a bit more time to get down.  Practice in all positions for sure.  With 6010 for a first bead, then 7018 on top, this is typically how pipe is done.  Also practice with some 7014 and 7024 in larger sizes for fast production fillet welds level or slight slope.  I myself only have about 30 lbs of rod under my belt as a weekend warrior... so I'm no expert, BUT... I would also recomend Lincoln's welding bible.  It bridges the gap between weekend warrior knowledge, and the technicals of industrial production welding.  It has lots of info on rod choice, sizing, joint fitup, steel classifications and specialty metals.  Brian Lee  Sparkeee27
Reply:get this book.."new lessons in arc welding" and read through it and do some of the projects and you'll be prepped.off topic about IH stuff..email me if yu wantOwner - Certified Welding & Fabrication / 22yrs in businessSteamboat Springs, Co(970) 879-5491AWS structural shopHMI 70t iron worker2 field trucks specailizing in structural steel, aluminum and stainless steel
Reply:Does he have any other guys working for him with stick experience?  If you could spend and hour or two with some direct instruction, it would make a hugh difference.  Then it's just practice, practice, practice. What type and size of rods will you be using?  There is more than enough people around that we can give you some basic operating amps.  Good Luck. Here in the Great White NorthMosquitoes can't fly at 40 below
Reply:You should get it down pretty quick. I've only been welding for maybe a year and I'm pretty good at it. The hardest things for me to master were up/downhill welding. I'm good with downhill, but I'm still working on uphill. At school we mainly use Lincoln FleetWeld 1/8" 6010, it runs a good bead and I use it all the time on stuff I've been building. I still haven't had the opportunity to weld on pipe, but next week I'm going to try it out.RD 1984 Chevrolet C30 welding truck1966 Lincoln SA200 Continental F162 1942 Lincoln SA200 Hercules IXB-51991 Lincoln LN25
