I was cleaning off my camera from last week, and thought I would post some of them.  Not many weld pics, but perhaps some of you will enjoy killing sometime and checking them out.  First job was a broken spindle on a chicken litter spreader.  Had to charge extra for the smell on this one.  Started by boring a sleeve. Then whipped out a spindle for it.and the finished product....I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Jackson, that spindle looks great! what type of material did you use?
Reply:Moving on.....  Next up was a Lay-by Sprayer we built for one of the local farmers.  we started with a frame he already had.  Then we had to splice into it, and lengthen it out to 39 foot. Then we started welding on the legs that will hold the spray nozzles.Finish welding it up and adding the spring guides...I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:I hope you made good buck buck buck buuuuccccks for that one, good job.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Then last we had to put in some water meters, and of course all of the pipes are five inches off the ground.  Finished with the meter installed..I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:One down one more meter to go.  I had to shift the outlet down a few inches on this one. Wound up finishing this one in the flooding rain as the last pic shows the pipes wet.    Last one finished and the week is over.  I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Thanks for the compliments guys...Mark,  the spindle was just plain old 1018.  Nothing special.  The sleeve was actually made from some old heavy wall pipe that I had laying in the scrap pile.  It was just long enough that I was able to go ahead and make three more as well for when the others have to be replaced.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Nice repair on the Dexter axle.  Next time they don't grease the bearings, you can just make a new spindle, slide the old one out.......I love working with square tubing. All good work and thank you for the pics.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Excellent axle repair, I expect to see a few casualties like that when summer gets close and all the boats get dragged out of storage. I've a friend with a chicken litter spreader and I try not to get too close. What's a LayBy Sprayer? Here and in England, a Layby is somewhere you can stop at the side of the road. But you'd be able to spray them with a 10 foot boom.Funny how pipes are always less than a rod length from the ground. Also the blue cover on your shoulders looks to have dome fasteners, is it made to attach to coveralls or similar?Always nice to see what you've been up to."One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for." Reply:In old days there were very important people in practically every village - Blacksmiths. From your pictures it is easy to understand why those people were very important.By-the-by I see your hood is not AD, Correct?Always a pleasure to see masters at work.
Reply:wow.. never seen a craftsman lathe before... what kind of welder were you using on those sprayers?http://www.aloumac.ca/
Reply:please tell me the reason the splice on the sprayer tube is diamond shapedthx
Reply:Nomand, I use both style of hoods.  The black hood earlier is just an old Jackson helmet.   The blue one pictured later is a Miller elite.  Matthew, We built the sprayer using a Ranger GXT  and a Miller bobcat.  What you see in the picture is a Miller 12VS voltage sensing wire feeder.  Weldbead.  When you plate a weld it's always best to cut a plate in a diamond.  Tubing doesn't like sharp corners.  A sharp corner creates a stress point, and will lead to cracking.  Better to round or taper the ends of any plate used in that manner. Thanks again for the compliments.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Excellent work, I have never seen any cotton equipment. Thanks for the pictures Yup
Reply:We call that a fish plate in the oilfield Jackson, lol. Don't ask me why. I always round the points. Again I don't know why I do it. Cause I can I guess, lol. At least it looks like you can dig with a shovel there. Where I am from you need a jackhammer, lol. Nothing but a big rock, and it's always on the ground.Very interesting seeing the spray rig. Not much farming left back home and none around here I have seen. I guess it's just as hard to farm a swamp as it is to farm a rock. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.

Reply:Well zap I didn't want to state it but that was my theory in rounding them. Just an idea I had a long time ago that seemed to make sense to me, but I sure caught a lot of you know what for using ovals instead of diamonds from everyone else. I was taught to cut circles, ovals or squares with rounded corners in beams to prevent stress cracks, After that I just started applying it to everything I could. I've never had one fail that I know of, but have had to go repair those with the points on them. Always on the sub base of a pumping unit. When I box sections of frames and beams I always cut the ends in a half circle back toward the center of the section as well. That was a case of it can't hurt and it looks a lot nicer. Scientifically I don't know that it makes any difference at all. I used to patch a lot of injection lines (used to pump water down wells and push oil through the formation to a pumping well). These are normally 2 3/8 and the patches are cut out of 2 7/8 as they are a perfect fit. I always caught a lot of flack because I rounded the corners on those as well. I don't know that it made any difference strength wise but it certainly was easier to get it sealed off that way. You have to do it with water coming out as there is no way to ever get it stopped. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
