This question has probably been asked many times but I am still confused. I wish to build a small aluminum boat about 5 to 6 metres, 3 mm to 5mm plate. I have looked at kits and plans and they all recommend MIG welders in the 250amp range. I have just ordered a 200amp AC pulse TIG. Will this do the job?I do have a 220 amp MIG but have never welded aluminum. I understand it is easier to weld aluminum with a TIG is this true or not. Should I set my MIG up for aluminum and start to practice or wait and master the TIG.My last projecthttp://stonevahestate.tripod.com/houseboat/
Reply:Wow!Your house boat is incredible!  Nice job.I would suggest setting up and learning Aluminum MIG, just because TIG is so much slower.Based on what you've done with steel, you'll probably be teaching Aluminum MIG boat building in about 3 months.
Reply:that is kool  mig is faster than tig and easerChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:Howdy Howdy!  I would suggest getting a spool gun (and control module if neaded) and run the alluminum that way.  Then you can have steel and alluminum setup ready to go!  And, both alot faster and more economical then tig as well.  Tig CAN produce prettier beads, depending on the operator, but Mig should be used for larger projects in my mind.  Nice work bye the way   Brian Lee  Sparkeee27
Reply:Geez.... Is that boat, like, 1200 sqft?
Reply:That's if you only count the heated space.  Basement and garage are extra.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:In order to build your Kingdom, I'd suggest both.
