This is an attachment for a Bobcat.  Its a rock hound.  The chain went loose, wore out the sprocket and started jumping.  I knocked out the piece next to the hole and the piece that is in the blue from the grinder.ONE whack with this hammer and it went right back into place.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I had exactly 3 sticks of 3/32 7018.  10 lbs of 1/8", but it was too big, so I used 3/32 6013.  It didn't go too wellso I also tried some 3/32 Messer (MG) 7018AT.  It wasn't much better.  I saved the 7018 for the inside corner.I guessed at the holes with a 1/4" bit.  I came pretty close, so I drilled them out to 3/8 and finished up with a die grinder.Last edited by David R; 07-30-2008 at 09:51 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Finished product.  I also welded some cracks in the bucket.  Total time including travel 3.5 hours.DavidLast edited by David R; 07-30-2008 at 09:58 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Nice save David.  Amazing what the power of hydraulics can do ain't it?  What was that plate - 1/4"?  5/16"?Forgive my ignorance but what's with the plate between your work cable visegrips and the piece?Last edited by duaneb55; 07-30-2008 at 10:40 PM.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Oh oh, where's the Dewalt grinder? The third picture shows thread impressions in the side of the mount bolt hole. The bolts were probably too short or put in backwards. Important, because it looks like a loose bolt started all the mayhem. If the bolt head was at the plate, it would provide a shoulder right at the parting line as a pilot, rather than threads; a much better fit. Also a stray chain wouldn't be able beat the bolt loose as easily as it can a nut.Of course if it hadn't come loose, where would we be? Somewhere talking about acetone?Nice fix, thanks for the pics.

Reply:That area right around the hydraulic motor mount looks like the weak point anyway. Considering the forces in play it looks like it was designed to create a job ..  Of course, like most equipment, you almost need a weak point built in.
Reply:I got a skidsteer with that same problem just not that sloppy yet and I couldnt figure out how to fix it so thank you for posting the pictures

Reply:David,,,,,   I really got to say, you approached this thing the right way, not just fixing the problem, but determining what caused the problem in the first place.  If you are correct, and it was the chain that caused the problem in the first place, your repair should be more than adequate for a long time to come.I would like to point out a couple things,,,,,,   first, although you were the man on site, and perhaps there were time and/or budget constraints that limited your options,,,,,,  and being portable (can't just run back to the shop, gotta use what is on the truck), another way to fix this would've been to section out the bad piece, and replace, with maybe something 1/8"  heavier,,,,  with the holes already drilled/cut in.  IF you had the material and equipment there, could possibly been even faster and easier. Also, for whatever it's worth, I've never liked that two-bolt flange for the hydraulic motor,  anytime something like that gets bound up, puts ALL the pressure on the plate, right where the bolt-heads are.   Again, I've been in this position before, when working portable, and the customer needs the equipment up and running, you just gotta do what you can, with what's available, right now.If life were all perfect and peachy,,,,,   of course,,,,,  you'd have two weeks to get the job done,,,,  time to look at it, get measurements, order a new 4-bolt mount for that motor, make a new mount-plate ready to be sectioned in, go back, and do a real bang-up job, better than original. So understand, no criticism,,,,,,  machine broke at 10:00, you were called at 10:15, got the machine up and running again by 2:00, that's our business, right?????   Just want to make sure others understand, like maybe that guy who posted earlier, if he wants, and has the time, there are other options available.  Big thing he has to understand,,,,,  you got a problem, you can fix it better if you do it when you  have the time and resources to do it whatever way you want to ,,,, rather than wait till it breaks on the jobsite.
Reply:I thought about making an plate. I have 20' 3/8" X 6 hot rolled in "stock".  I did what they wanted.  I was welding the cracks in the bucket and the guy (landscaper) showed up with his trailer.  Call received 3:15pm, Repair done next day 11:30 am.I would have cut a plate and used my NEW Miller circle cutter for the plasma.  That and my helmet are the only blue things I own.I bought 2 10 Lb cans of Lincoln 3/32 7018 today. One is sealed on the truck.  DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Looks good to me. Now what does a rock hound do? Pick up rocks maybe? Just curious as I have never seen one before. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:Its a power rake.  Roto tiller....sort of....  the rocks end up in the bucket.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Good as new David.    It's just too bad that "new" on some of these skid implements isn't really that hot. We run a similar ( sort of ) bucket with a broom head instead of the rock hound, and between operator abuse, and the thin guage stock that they are made of, they need to be patched up all the time.I have some ideas of what to do to fix them up to handle the work, but no time now. It's on my list of winter projects.... my long, long list of winter projects.
