My company requires that we wear safety glasses at all times and when we're grinding we have to use triple eye protection in wearing the safety glasses plus the welding shield and goggles over the glasses.  Because of this my glasses will bead over in condensation from the heat coming off my face and head along with the light perspiration so I have to stop every two minutes and dry out the glasses causing lost time.  I've made sure the vents into the goggles are clear and even cut two large squares out between the band and the body of the goggle for additional airflow but it hasn't helped.  I've also done the spit on the lense and tried and anti fog solution but nothing works, any ideas?
Reply:Well, your eyes are important and I appreciate your company's attitude...I think what you need is a battery powered ventilator... a tube delivering air to the area your glasses are in...and some hole for it to escape.  Every two minutes is a real pain and distraction.... can't be good for efficiency either...I think a way to evacuate the saturated air and replace with dry is the only  workable solution  ... heating your glasses I assume not viable.....LOLWeldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
Reply:Neutrogena soap. It is transparent amber. Leave it dry. Get a little on a soft clean dry rag and rub inside the glasses, polish it out. The condensation now forms a clear film and can be seen through. Not perfect though.
Reply:double protection i can understand as in goggles and shield or safety glasses and shield. sounds like you need to grab the safety man and ask him to show you how he does it.225NT bobcatAEAD200LEScott 125mm175, mm252 w 30A, PT225mm211, TA 181iHyper Therm 380, cut master 529100X & XX, Digital Elite6 Victor setssmith little torch, meco midget kalamazoo band sawsteel max saw evoulution circular saw
Reply:I wear eye glasses.I have bought plastic framed regular eye glasses and had the same experience of the plastic framed glasses fogging up.The plastic gets warm from being near your face or touching your face. When I switched back to metal framed eyeglasses (plastic prescription lenses), the problem went away.I would experiment with safety glasses with different frames and see if you can reduce the condensation problem.BTW...I Googled non fog safety glasses on the internet and came up with some choices!!Last edited by Donald Branscom; 03-19-2011 at 05:04 PM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:Everything is company provided so I can't really bring in much of anything except prescription safety glasses.  Believe it or not we still get trash in eye injuries even with triple eye protection though it happens when goggles are being removed or put on due to debris falling from the top of the goggles onto the face and into the eye's.  I've been thinking about making a micro blower unit powered by a 9 volt to force air through an input hole into the goggles though I would rather have a rechargeable battery with a small solar unit like AD lenses to not have to keep buying batteries and mess with recharging all the time.
Reply:I use anti fog wipes.  Bausch & Lomb is the maker.  It isn't perfect, but it is much better than the alternative.
Reply:used them before when I was in welding school and it just made the fog turn to larger drops of condensation much like what I'm dealing with now.
Reply:I use Rain-X Anti-fog on the face shield of my racing helmet.  Maybe that would work . . . available from Jeg's and Summit Racing and sometimes the local auto parts.Dynasty 300DXSmith He/Ar gas mixerMM350PHobart Handler 120Smith LW7, MW5, AW1A
Reply:Thats what I used on my miller AD and it still happened without wearing safety glasses.  I found some micro blower units now I just need to buy one or two and get some wiring and figure out what kind of rechargeable battery set up I want to go with.  Soon as I get it all together I'll post a build log.
Reply:I like the vent suggestion.   When I am doing a lot of grinding, I use a Triton PAPR, a Powered Air Purifying Respirator.   It includes a hard hat, headphones, a face shield, and a battery powered air pump that brings in filtered outside air.   I know when the battery is low because my glasses or the face shield start to condense.   A PAPR is about ten times as effective as a regular respirator, in terms of protecting you from breathing dust.  Mine has cloth that goes around my neck, loosely fitted, to keep outside air from slipping in;  the air exits around my neck.  Once it is on I kind of forget about it, not uncomfortable, especially when you think about all the levels of protection that I have when I wear it.They make similar units that have a welding face shield.  They are not cheap, so I don't have one.  If I am switching back and forth from welding to grinding I just wear a respirator under my welding mask, earplugs, and take off the mask when I am not welding.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:Uvex Genesis are great for not fogging up... only draw back is they tend to scratch easily. Check out this thread... thread
