I was hoping that someone could pass along some information on types of filler rods used for tig welding. I get confused on s-2, s-6, which one is copper coated, much less all the other rods. I've dug around on the net but can't seem to find some kind of chart...  Thanks for the help. AJ
Reply:thats an interesting question....what exactly do you want to weld?there are soooooo many variables here more info is needed...zap!
Reply:after re-reading the post again...70-s is most likely with cold rolled and hot rolled steel*there are many stainless rods so just go with the rod thats closest to the # series stainless your going withmost common aluminium filler is 4043 and 5356* providing you grind away the outer crust prior to welding...zap!
Reply:ER70S-6......ER70S-2The S = solid wire.  You will predomintately find this a variable with mig and flux core where you have solid wire and tubular wire, but tig or cut length is the same.   The "2" is to do with the deoxiders and such in the rod.  Same for the 6.  I dont recall how high it goes,  i think 6.  The most common Ive seen is 6.  6 offers the most.  For dirtier steels.  2 is used on steel that is very clean.  Has less silicon for a clean weld bead after welding.  These designations dont relate to whether its copper coated or not. The copper is for rust inhibitition prior to welding.IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:That's the type of info I'm looking for, I can't seem to find any published stuff like that. I'm mainly tig welding mild steel tubing. It's just there's so much to know and learn, I'd like to get a little deeper. Welders talk these numbers and I don't know the "what" and "why" of the rods they are using.Thank's for the info. Aj
Reply:NP, glad to be of assistanceInfortuanately there are some things out there that arent well published.  And as a result there still are lots of folks who really dont know this stuff.  Im forutuante to have gone to school, live in a big manufac city and have just gotten lucky knowing a lot of folks in the right places that know exactly why and what these numbers mean...if an engineer at a wire manufac doesnt know what these numbers mean cant say I quite know who wouldIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:I've found out a little info on the subject of filler rods. This is a great sight a buddy of mine pointed me to:http://www.mylincolnelectric.com/Cat...sp?locale=1033Check out "cut to length consumables"Thanks for the help....  AJ
Reply:Oh yes the lincoln site.  Very good info.  I noticed the ER70S-2 wire has triple deoxiders with titanimum and alum and zirc.   Kinda interstingIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:Another Place for info and also a good place to buy from is Tig Depot.   http:www.tigdepot.com/products/p29.html   This page has info on all the different fillers.
