Hey people, how are we all today.I would just like to know what i am capable of doing with the current welder that i have at home, it is a 240volt 15Amp AIS miniweld (Australian brand). and i was just wondering what i can do with it, e.g., whats the thickest material i can weld on, and how it rates against your average welder, as i will only be doing minor things like shelves, maybe a trailer or 2, and other odd jobs that i can pick up, as it is the only welder i currently have at home, and i was jus wondering how it sizes up against an AVERAGE welder, weather it is above or below standard, as i have heard people talking about 250 and 300 Amp welders, so that sorta makes me think that my lil baby is a sh!t kicker. so whats the go with it, what is some of the ups and downs of it?Thanks in advance, Shane"One World...One Muay Thai...Muay Thai Never Dies..."
Reply:15 amps?????IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:That's what I was thinking too, Chris.  You could barely melt a beer can with that...Weazy,you must be talking about the draw from the outlet.  I tried looking up that machine on google and had no luck.  Sounds like you might be talking about a 50-90 amp hobby stick welder.  15 amps would probably not support much more than that unless it's an inverter.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:How about this one, "Miniarc", MC66, 15 amp input, 45 to 140 amp output, made by WIA, sold by AIS.http://www.welding.com.au/PDFE/Mc66.pdf
Reply:if its 240v id think atleast 150 amp?IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:And as long as your at that site, cut it backwards 'till you get to this site,Might be a good resource. http://www.welding.com.au/index.html
Reply:hmm, maybe it is higher, cause it says on the back only plug into a 15 amp outlet or sumthing, so maybe it is higher. ill ask dad when he gets home from work this arvo, cause yesterday i just got it out and cleaned it up, and cleaned all the cob webs and cockaroach terds off the welding masks, and by the way, on the welding mask, on the filter, it has this writing then it had the number 10 on it, does that mean its shade protection # is 10, and is this suitable for stick welding?"One World...One Muay Thai...Muay Thai Never Dies..."
Reply:yes it's a shade #10 and yes you can stick with itChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:Hey Weazy,I think Sandy has found you little welder, follow the link on sandy's post and you can see some info about it, If it is your welder it's a good little machine for around the home and light fabrication work (I used to sell them once)I suggest you use a WIA austarc 13S (AS/NZS E4113) it's a good all rounder and should do all you will want to for now. Reply:Weazy,Your house probably has 10amp fuses on the power board.A welder will probably blow them regularly. Upgrade the circuit you're using for the welder to 15amp. And get the electrician to fit a cut out switch while he's there. It cuts the power instantly if there's a short anywhere.Scott
Reply:Thanks for finding that for me sandy, yea thats it i think, and about the fuses, dad said that i can still operate on our 10 amps, but it will just trip the circuit breaker if i am really dragging a lot of power out of the house, in other words doing a massive weld, or leaving the welder running for long periods of time. But if it does happen to break heaps, then i spose i Will have to call an electrician in.and the sticks that i got have this written on it.SATINCRAFT 136013it has some other small writing but i can barely make it out, as its at the top of the stick, where the flux is tapering. The material i am welding on is AS250 mild steel,so is the electrodes i have suitable for use on mild steel, cause one of the apprentice boiler makers gave it all to my dad?"One World...One Muay Thai...Muay Thai Never Dies..."
Reply:Hey Weazy,Satincraft 6013 is perfect for mild steel, it's all I use. Check out this website for more info on this and other electrodes:http://www.cigweld.com.au/cigweld/index.asp On the powerpoint question, it all depends what else is on the same "loop" as the powerpoint you're using for the welder. If you have an air conditioner, dryer and kettle all plugged into powerpoints on the same loop and you fire up the welder, it's going to blow the fuse.So if you tell everyone else in your house not to use any high power appliances while you're welding, you should be fine!If your shed has it's own fuse in the main fuse box it means it's got it's own loop, you won't have any problem as long as you don't start the compressor and welder at the same time.J.
Reply:Thank jdh, well i have used it over 10 times in the last week, and it hasnt dropped out once, so id say its all good now. Thanks for your help and advice JDH, Welder.Man and others, when i think of something to post, i will as soon as possible, thanks again. bye"One World...One Muay Thai...Muay Thai Never Dies..."
Reply:One of the great things about the internet is I get to try to figure out how english is spoken around the world.    While I can imagine what "break heaps" means it is all new to me.As for the electrician how about a DIY approach?    Hopefully that is still legal in your part of the world.    Not sure about England though, I here that even that is a no no.    Speaking of which a little electrical knowledge can be really helpfull in the metals trades.    Doesn't mean you have to DIY, but atleast you can ask an electrician to do something in a intelligent way.ThanksDave Originally Posted by Weazy......But if it does happen to break heaps, then i spose i Will have to call an electrician in.
