What grade steel would you recommend?  I am going to build a new wedge + 4-way for a friend of mine.  It gets used pretty heavily and will be splitting oak, hickory and other hard species. If you have any pictures of wedges you have built or have please post them.  I am open to suggestions.  The splitter is a vertical with wedge mounted on the cylinder.I will post pictures of it when I get it done.
Reply:this one is a bit extreme   100% machined and replaceable.  I wouldnt go 4 way if your cutting big rounds.    to hard to cut small pieces when you need em   i cancut any size i need w this onebtw  i think its A-36Ill get close ups today Attached Images“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair
Reply:i made both of these wedges using A36. straight wedge is 1" thick x 8" tall.  the splitting angle is 15*.  it goes back from the leading edge 1 1/4".  the 4 way is all A36 1/2".  the 2 wings should be angled toward the leading edge.  the 4 way wedge is able to split oak rounds up to 8".dave. Reply:Here's some pics of the wedge and splitter.  Its made to run off any hydrolic pump. Even the Peterbuilt but mostly use the skidsteer.  Has a 50 ft. retractable hose Attached Images“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair
Reply:Few more pix.  those two pipes welded on the plate in the 3rd pic are the beverage holders.   they were tacked on the veritcal ibeam.   That cylinder popped it right off when splitting big rounds.Go big or go home lol Attached Images“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair

Reply:If A36 is all yall are using then I will not worry.  I will post up soon.

Reply:a few of the benefits of my splitter in having the wedge attached to the ram are:the ability to use horizontal or verticalcontrol of the splitting edge [safety]removal of wedge for maintenance or rework.iv'e had to remove it twice since it was built.  once to build the 4 way wedge.  and once to add the angles on the sides [to increase splitting efficiency].dave
Reply:I have never used one but I would think a stationary wedge at the end would let the wood pile up behind the splitter and a moving wedge would pile it up in the middle of the splitter. Using the splitter horizontally of course. I think it would be easier to have it with the stationary?????"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:I like the stationary wedge it allows you to keep splitting without having to move the pile. as you split the pile is pushed away from the machine instead of  falling at you feet. At first i like the idea of a wedge on the cylinder for vertical use, but i find it much easier to lift a log up and work standing upright at the machine than being hunched over dealing with split pieces. there are also ways to make the splitting wedge removable even if it is in a "fixed" position.  two thumbs up for the fixed wedge (four way at that)

Reply:here is a splitter i built yrs ago. hooks to the tractor and runs off it's live hydraulics. the wedge is 1" thick with 2"x3/8" angle welded cross. the pic shows the wedge in the retracted position between the (for lack of anything better to call them) knock off plates. you will want those encase the log gets stuck on the wedge. just raise it up and the plates will knock it loose. this splitter handles 2 foot diameter Almond tree rounds with ease which when compared to oak makes the oak look like pine for hardness. i have used it on valley oak round as big as 4 foot diameter. try that with your horizontal splitter. good luck unless you have a hydraulic lift for the log.
