I have a oxy/acetylene poratable torch I use for HVAC work and I have only used it for brazing copper using silphos. I just realized I can also use it to weld steel. My question is what type of welding rod do I use? Can I use the welding rods they sell at Home Depot that say they are for Arc welders? The book Im reading tells me I can weld with my oxy/acet set up but it does not mention what type of rod to use?
Reply:The most common filler metal for oxyacetylene welding of steel is RG45. It can be had at any local welding supply, or over the net.City of L.A. Reply:RG or R60 is the only other option.  ER70S- fillers work but they lack the deoxidizers and just don't run as nicely.  In fact, try using an R45 or R60 with a TIG welder, you may like the way it runs more than the TIG specific fillers.Last edited by 76GMC1500; 10-16-2010 at 08:42 PM.
Reply:Now there's an interesting idea... oxy/acetylene welding with arc welding sticks!  They got plenty of flux coating on 'em!  Really I have no idea if that would work at all.  It just sounded rather humorous to me.It's been years since I've actually welded anything with oxy/acetylene.  RG45 filler is what I used, still have some hanging around.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:You can use any steel rod for gas welding on steel.  R45 and R60 are prefered for mild steel.  The only other application where you may prefer a gas torch weld is 4130 chrome moly.  For that application you're going to use either R60, ER70-, or 4130 wire.  The great part about gas is you can get reasonable ductility with the 4130 wire on 4130 chro-mo.
Reply:rg is the aws terminology, actually should have been gr because it means gas rod..if  you  dont wanna build an airplane, you can weld stuff with a coat hanger, although it will include some impurity..depends what u r doin..
Reply:you dont wanna use rod with flux on it..the combusted gas is the shield in this process..
Reply:All weve done in school since august here is gas welding, and brazing. We use RG45. The teacher buys it in huge plastic tubes, although you can buy it from tsc at an insane price, or from any welding supply. He says he welds with coat hangers at home, and i remember reading something about using 6013 rod with all the flux knocked off. Ive never tried it, but i hear other people have?[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009

Reply:I have used bailing wire as filler for gas welds.  The welds cracked during cooling.  Don't waste  your time with any of the questionables.  Buy 10lbs of RG45, it will last you a lifetime should cost less than $20.
Reply:ALl of my welding is done with OA, I get my filler (RG45/60) from cyberweld.com.  The LWS guys just stared at me when I asked for filler for OA welding - they ended up giving me some TIG rod so I decided to not bother with them for that anymore.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
Reply:I picked up a lb. of rg45 at a welding supply house today for $3.00. On ebay they wanted $6.00 plus $12.00 S/H for a lb.  Someones getting boned whoever buys that. i picked up some #11 and #10 lenses as well for $6.00. Nice shop, had a hot brunette behind the counter in her 30's. Very Nice.I made a container for the rods out of 3/4" PVC and labeled it rg45.Last edited by BrianM07; 10-18-2010 at 03:52 PM.

Reply:Just remember that when welding, the torch is getting much closer to the heat and sparks. You can braze a whole lot, and never need to clean your torch tip.  Start welding, and you'll want to own a tip cleaning tool.  Just don't over use it, because those little broaches are files, and they will slowly open up the tip, until it gets too oversized.RG45 is probably what you want, but wire hangers are almost as good.

Reply:Originally Posted by gwileyYikes!!! #10 and #11 will have you welding blind. You need a #5 shade for gas welding.  I have used the goggles but I prefer a full helmet to deal with the inevitable pop.  If the inner cone contacts the weld puddle it tends to pop and spray molten steel all over the place.
Reply:I tend to keep my speedglas on 11 for most TIG, but I have brown eyes.  They say people with blue eyes often need one shade darker with everything else being equal.

Reply:Originally Posted by technoidThe problem I found with gas welding is with thick steel it requires more time to preheat the surface. You do have more control with the puddle but it requires more wrist movement. If you get that occasional POP! it means your not moving fast enough and got the puddle to hot. The gas replacement can be expensive. In my area the full size bottles are not usually sold out right so you have to rent them. I weld mostly sheet metal, and 1/16 to 1/4 steel with gas in areas where my mig can't reach. I like the 3/32 rod.
Reply:Originally Posted by BrianM07Yep, I have the MC and the small oxygen bottle. What size tanks do you recommend? I bought this torch off of ebay but they are too big for my little torch. Im guessing I need to buy larger tanks and hoses that will fit on this larger torch handle. Im a dumbass for not realizing they were too big for my small tank.  http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Reply:All these prices seem so high ... I found weldingsupply has them for $ 1.85 a pound ... $ 1.70/lb for 5 pounds or more ... $ 1.56/lb over 100 pounds ...
