hello all! I'm in some real need of opinions here!! My father really wants a welding jacket for xmas and he hasnt told anyone what kind/color, etc. I dont want to ruin the gift idea by digging for ideas (and I'm not sure he would know himself), plus money is tight this year, so I need ideas on what type / brand I should possibly get him. What is the better bang for my buck? cotton jacket? cape sleeve and bib set? leather? brands? Thank You,Desperate for help!
Reply:Do you know what kind of work he does?  Somebody that only does small mig welds on a table every now and then will probably want a different jacket than someone who stick welds overhead or carbon arcs all day.
Reply:Agreed, someone who does tig would propably be best served with one of the light weight cotton jackets. Someone who does a lot of vertical and overhead stick/mig would be better with an all leather jacket. A hobbyist who does mig/stick would probably find the cotton ones with leather sleeves more comfortable in the summer. You have the protection from sparks on the arms with the leather, and the main body is lighter and cooler with the cotton. If nothing else maybe a gift certificate to the local welding supply for about what say a mid range jacket might go for, and then he can get whatever he wants..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:yeah he is a project welder, doesnt do it all day long and we do live in FL which is blistering hot most of the time! now if I go with a cotton or cotton with leather sleeves what brands are usually the best, miller, tillman, bsx, hobart, etc?
Reply:Tillman 9230 is a great jacket.
Reply:Serious weldersHalf Jacket for in the summerHobbyist(tend to not last as long as leather) (both Miller and Lincoln have great products)I would go for the full leather if he is going to weld overhead or weld often as he can not get burnt as easily. I use the half jacket in the summer when at work. I like the loos of the Tillman 9230, for a hobbyist, I think that is the best. Just some options.Last edited by oxygen454; 12-20-2010 at 12:41 AM.

Reply:I have both a full leather jacket I got at napa that I like using most of the time.  Can't remember exactly what it cost but with a garage discount it was pretty cheap.  When its hot out I really like having a cloth half-jacket to keep my arms from getting scorched.
Reply:Nice to know this that your father is Project Welder. For him i will recommend you nice design leather welding jackets. I hope you will like this. Attached Images

Reply:First of all...  ...ohh nevermind, I think I'm just going to let this one go. You're kind of missing the point entirely, and are obviously only looking to engage in an e-pissing match. If you really want me to pick on your faulty logic and archetypal syntax, I'm happy to oblige you, if provided sufficient motivation to do so. So thug away...But really, I've got better things to do. And was only trying to look out for YOUR and everyone else's best interests.Truly no good deed goes unpunished. lol Have a good night.

Reply:ncfh ... I did pick up on the fact that safetywear could have been promoting a particular product ... I however was commenting on the gist of the post being concern about what type jacket might be available since they stated "What is the better bang for my buck? cotton jacket? cape sleeve and bib set? leather? brands?" ... Oh ... And thank you for the compliment ... I am an archetype ... The one and only of me ... I have been there, done that ... Reply:Ive welded forever wearing the Wrangler FRC shirts and/or wrangler denim jackets. With that said....the denim is great for a hobiest...but for real hot and heavy stuff....no way.  Wont fly.Rod welding is the worst and flux isnt much better when it comes to fireballs....leather is great at stopping them, but damn, it gets hot an humid here on the coast...leather in july or august will kill you.just my opinion.
