Hello all,I am an electrician with 23 years experience in heavy commercial/industrial work. I am interested in getting a welding cert for powerhouse/refinery work. I have been taking arc welding classes at the local vocational school towards that end.The electrical welder qual test is almost universally a plate test. Grooved plate (1/4" or 3/8"), 1/4" root with backer plate, 7018 electrode in horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.I would like to get myself a welding machine primarily to practice these skills. I don't have alot of room at the moment to set up a dedicated area for the machine so I would like to keep it small and somewhat portable (i.e. I would have to break down the work area and store the machine after use).I would like to know if the small "suitcase" type welders such as the Lincoln Invertec or Miller Maxstar are good choices or if I would be better served with a small transformer machine such as a Thunderbolt or Stickmate? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I am also open to any suggestions in practice that would help me along my way.Regards,Ron Lupinacci
Reply:I have heard good things about the everlast machines, I know thier can do stick and tig.you also might consider an engine driven machine on a trailer, this will keep it very portable, and give you a place to store everything. It will also mean if you have a buddy or relative who needs something welded you can take the welder to them, instead of having them drop it off at your place, which you will find is an advantage.
Reply:Some people have heard good things about Neverlast welders.A lot of people who know how to weld have heard nothing but bad about Neverlast welders.Depends on who you want to listen to.  A wantabe who doesn't know anything about welding or guys who've used welding machines for years.I wouldn't have a Neverlast in my shop if you gave me one.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:I got some of the best American made iron on the planet. Two Red Faces, two Short Hoods, and a Black Face. My little Everlast PowerArc 200 welds as good as any of the machines I mentioned! I'm not going by hear say, I own all of them!  Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
