Here is a small rail we installed today.  The first is a photo of my channel bending tool.  I take it on site and make my pattern against the steps.  The pattern is used as the bottom channel.  The wrench is used for twisting the channel to  make it a helix.  I formed the cap in my ring roller and got it close then used heat and water to make it fit the top channel.  My bending tool is operated by inserting the channel between the pipes and bending.  The bender attaches to my truck hitch or is welded to a table.  The second is a photo of the pairs of cap. After bending and before twisting. The rail is not plumb at the bottom the contractor is supposed to set it in concrete and plumb. Last edited by tapwelder; 06-20-2008 at 11:53 PM.

Reply:Very nice work.I'm curious about how the bender is used. Is it just a series of short bends? Slide the stock between the 2 tubes on the bender then give the stock a nudge, slide it in a bit and nudge again and so on? I'm thinking the twist is to keep the hand rail flat in relation to the steps, yes? Always wondered how those sort of hand rails got fabed, now I know. Thanks for the post.
Reply:Thanks guys.Yes DSW, the bar channel is bumped along to get the curve.  I actually use two wrench for the twisting the other is just a regular 12" cresant. I have bent railing with many different technique, this works the best for me--with no sacrificial patterns.  This is the first time I used my ring roller to get the cap close to the channel shape.  The ring roller makes uniformed arcs and most steps do not conform to any uniformed arc.

Reply:I usually just go straight with that kind of steps but that curve looks good. I'll try that next time. The job came out great----as usual.
Reply:Thanks again.Bob, these step are actually curved, it is difficult to tell.  My pattern fit right on the outside corner of each nosing.  The contractor is an older gentleman who pays attention to detail and doesn't appear to be rushed. Thus he, paid the masons to put a radius in the steps.  I have put curved rails on straight flared steps,  I think it takes up a lot space.  Plants can go on the outside of the rail, then, I guess.

Reply:Yup... 'nother small CLASSY rail.  Nice work. How did you secure the front posts?  Looks like they are set in the ground.
Reply:do tou have a pic. of your ring roller and how did you use it on the top railare those 6" peices of pipe
Reply:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...ing+roller+200  There is a link to the original post in the last post on that thread. That is 3" schedule 40. The ring roller got it close to the pattern, then I used heat to get a more natural fit.Last edited by tapwelder; 09-09-2008 at 07:50 PM.
