I just got myself an air cooled tig torch, It will be used with a miller xmt 304 cc\cv power supply. I went to buy my argon cylinder and reg. today, and almost lost some bowels.....  190$$ for an 80 c.f. tank and about 90 for a flowmeter...Praxxair. Looks like I gotta wait for next payday...LOL. I was just wondering if I will need to know any particular tricks for the miller....I got impatient and tried a bead w\o gas, fully knowing that the only thing that would happen is complete and utter failure. But any tricks once things are proper would be greatly appreciated, btw, no remote just yet, will only change at the machine for a whileMiller blue star 2eLincoln 175
Reply:isn't it exciting?go easy with a air cooled torch...(they dont like hi amperage)take your time and go slow and remember clean is everything...and cleaner is better...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:to quote  Vince Lombardi  : clean isn't everything ; it's the only thing ". I tell people "clean is mediocre, sanitary is o k, STERILE is what you need ". for tig, especially  aluminum  tig .     its  really tough to get it across that prep  for aluminum is paramount , to a good weldLast edited by Roy Hodges; 06-26-2006 at 10:30 PM.
Reply:yeah I know that the air cooled torches dont like the hi amps, but while I was just playin, (30 amps) on 1/8" plate, blew right thru, I think 80 would be the absolute highest I'll be going for a while.!!!!Miller blue star 2eLincoln 175
Reply:Well, yes but the argon will cool that down a bit when you get it.
Reply:Good lord, $190 for the tank and fill? Check your yellow pages phone book and see if there are any other dealers. I rent my bottle for $4/month and my fills are $23. My Miller TIG machine came with all the equipment, so I didn't have to buy a Reg. Check around eBay-aroonie and other welding/car forums, you may find a used reg. for less. Make a post "wanted: regulator/flowmeter for miller tig machine".John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Fear,You weren't tigging, you were just t'ing without the "inert gas."   I don't blame you, though.    I always found it hard to wait for anything.  I agree with micro, though.  Check on a rental tank...you can be tigging TONIGHT!!!Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:I wonder why those Nazi's at the welding store push actually purchasing the tanks so hard.....they must make a lot of dough that way. They mentioned leasing the tanks, which in my eyes is the same, but actually renting them.....not an option (at least he didn't say anything)Miller blue star 2eLincoln 175

Reply:Most of the air cooled torches in use out there right now are 150 amps or less.  I think only in the past few years have 300 amp air cooled torches been widely available...I used one a couple of years back and liked it, but it put out some serious heat.  The water-cooled ones are more comfortable to use.I use a 150 amp weldcraft on a 250 amp welder.  You can weld all day long at 100-120 amps.  You might be able to do the same at 150 amps, but the heat gets intollerable.  I have a friend that has a spare watercooled torch that I borrow when I have to go higher than that...which is not that often. Some air cooled torches are 80-100 amp.  If you turn it up to 120 for any serious lenght of time, you will melt these.
