I must admit...I'm a bit impatient when it comes to using the search option for things on here. I just went and looked at a pretty good handrail job for a new mini mall type of building...I would like to know if any of you know or can show me in the right direction on how I can find out the correct/code abiding spaces for the vertical posts?
Reply:in my area its vertical only posts no more than 4" apart and a min height of 36" but you would have to go ask your local planning department what they want._______________________OF COURSE I DON'T LOOK BUSY... I DID IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME

Reply:Call the architect, it's their job to inform you of the code requirements.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:Is this a handrail or guardrail? A handrail can have a height of 36", but most codes call for approx. 42" height for a guardrail (as along the edge of a balcony or mez.). On guardrail, I have worked to plans calling for post spacing of between four and five feet. If you mean slats, it will depend on local codes for your application, and will certainly be less than six inches. Usually handrail post spacing is determined by the size and type of rail. 2" pipe rail could have posts spaced further apart than would be possible using 1 1/4" pipe.
Reply:Way too much variation from state/province to state/province. Have to ask local officials.200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.

Reply:pretty good interpretation here. The Standard is 42 inches plus or minus 3 inches. 36 inchs high is the old school standard. As mentioned here, the rail specs should be done already. If you are designing the rail yourself however, I would definitely make the top of the rail 42 inches.http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owad...ONS&p_id=25335Weldanpower 225 G7Ironworkers Local #24
Reply:UBC is 36" but alot of times I see 42".  As far as spindle/upright spacing, I've seen inspector take a 4" diameter sphere and use it as a go/no go gauge. The sphere should not be able to make it between any space between uprights, lower rail etc.Just for confusion, there are sections of UBC or IBC (can't recall which) that give relief from some of these requirements.** I'd talk to the local authorities. Hopfully they are better than my in town guy. Ask him a question about something in the code and he will refer you back to the section causing the question in the first place.**It has to do with accessibility to the public.Last edited by dunemetal; 04-19-2011 at 01:31 PM.Reason: ** added for clarification
Reply:OSHA does NOT govern building codes like the OP is talking about. As already mentioned the County/city will have a set of Building Codes for this type of application. If you build a set of stairs, rails etc at a factory or at a business that EMPLOYEES will use then OSHA is applicable If you build a set of stairs, rails etc for the PUBLIC then IBC is applicable.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Sorry for not getting back to any of you. Seems as though my settings got messed up and I was not being notified of your replies. This is a handrail...not a guard rail. I have made a call to the proper authorities and wouldn't ya know...they're too busy to return my call. I will try them again and also will speak with the contractor about the drawing. I am however designing off of an existing handrail within the close proximity. Vertical posts will be 1 1/4" hr solid square. horizontal bars will be 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" x1/8"/14g. tubing and pickets every 4" out of the same tube as well. Any suggestions on what to set this into the concrete walk with???
Reply:One possible problem in designing off an existing handrail.  If the code has changed, the existing rail may not have been updated because it is "grandfathered"I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap.
