I have a 10lb spool of mig wire mostly un used. Problem is there is alot of rust on it tried taking a brush to it to see if that would take it off didnt work well. Alot of it is not rusty though.  Is it ok to run with the oxidation on it what will the effect be on the weld?? I am mainly wanting to use this spool for practice but latter on i may use it for some projects. Also I feel like ive asked this befor. Im getting that odd kinda deja vu feeling for some reason but I did UTFSE no good results. So if im being redundant I apologize.http://www.leap.cc/cms/index.php
Reply:I have tried this twice in the last couple of years. I use a mig gun for a month then let it sit for a year. I have found no good way to do this and end up replacing a liner to because it gets filled with rust and crap. Spent the 19.00 and get yourself a new 10lb spool of mig wire. Trust me....
Reply:I wouldnt use it, the rust could wear out the liner quicker , like sand paper, and cause quicker wear on parts , rather then have smooth clean wire running through, just use it as tie wire around the shop. it will probably contaminate the weld..probably more of a headache using it than just chalking up the loss..sometimes were penny wise and dollar foolish..
Reply:Know matter what you do to clean it, it will never burn the same. It will have porosity, and poor bead appearance. Do what Tigwldr, and roadkillbobb  suggested and buy a new roll. I live in a very humid place, so I take my roll off when I'm through and put it in my house. Never had a problem yet.
Reply:Usually on mine I just unspool the rusty stuff and get down to the fresh clean wire. Of course that won't work if it's rusted deep down in the spool.-1948 Short Hood SA-200-Millermatic 251-Hypertherm PM45-Victor Torches/Regs
Reply:You now have a 10lb spool of baling wire.  Scrap it.Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.

Reply:Machine and Welding Supply. Small welding supply shop here in SC. Its cheap er70s carbon wire for hobbiest but no more than I use a mig gun I use it unless Im going to have a big job to do.
Reply:I gladly spend $30 on a 10lb spool at the local TSC. They sell the Hobart stuff, which runs like a dream unlike the esab stuff at school.[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
