Somebody must have hooked a chain to the safety loop and pulled too hard. One of the 3/16 thick safety chain loops was torn out:Attachment 24068It was okay, but I may have to rent a trailer out of state and I don't want to hear:OH MY GAWD! He's hooking the safety chain to the chassis!OrOH MY GAWD! That hitch has been welded! We can't rent you a trailer! So the repair had to be as strong as original and look like the original:Attachment 24069I reshaped the hole around a round bar. There was a piece missing, I added a small filler, but forgot or lost the pics.Attachment 24070Sorry about the poor pic quality, I think my camera's flash crashed. That's the reason for the flashlight!Last edited by denrep; 08-24-2009 at 11:31 AM.
Reply:Easy as 1,2,3. Looks just fine from here.
Reply:A little story.Bought my hay baler at an auction up in Brush CO.  Miller and Associates.  They put on a good equipment auction once a month.  Better equipment than you can buy in this state. So, anyhow, I gotta tow the thing home to Oklahoma.  Hook it to the bumper of the pickup, and head out at the scalding speed of 25mph.  Any faster, and the damn thing started bouncing so bad pieces might start fallin' off.Down I-76 to Denver, turn left, and get on I-70.  Pretty pleasant drive so far.  Good chance to observe the countryside at 25mph.  Recommend it to y'all.Things goin' fine until I got to Russell Kansas.  Nice little town, birthplace of Bob Dole.  Viagra sure picked that little town up.'Bout 5mi. West of Russell, I meet one of Kansas's finest.  A definitely not donut challenged state trooper.  He lights me up, and pulls me over.  Gotta use the lights specially for speeding hay balers.I make sure to get out and stand on the side of the highway.  Clarence doesn't like authority, and I don't need Depty Dawg puttin' a magnum in his skull.  Better to have the little confab standin' outside the truck.Well, the ol' boy come jinglin' up from the patrol car.  Got so much stuff on his gunbelt I can truly appreciate why cops have wide butts.  Gotta be to hold all that stuff above the beltline.Ol' boy walks around the truck and the baler.  Clarence is feelin' his oats, not makin' things better."You're overwidth".  No sir, it's 7' wide.  "Against the law to move farm machinery on an Interstate highway"  No sir, it's a matter of federal law.Guy makes another circuit around the baler.  It was almost like seeing a miracle......  Look comes inta his eyes, probably about the same as his wife saw the night his kid was concieved.  Uh Oh."Don't feel comfortable not seein' a safety chain"  OooooKaaaay.Got presented with a $75 ticket.   Payable in Russell KS at the Co. courthouse.  Gotta love those people for makin' it so handy.Spent the night in Russell, payed the fine, and headed back on down to Oklahoma on the state highway that goes South outta Russell.  Parting word, day before, from our gallant civil servant, "Don't let me see you on the Interstate again".Stopped at the first town that had a hardware store, and bought a chain.  Little thing, like ya see on screen doors.  Law says safety chain, don't say how big it's gotta be.  At least that was my impression.Get into Oklahoma, and got waves from the troopers.  Better folks around here.  More down to earth.  They know folks gotta do what they gotta do.Two day trip.  Gasoline, motels, resturaunts, and traffic fine cheaper than comin' all the way back home to get the other truck and go back with the gooseneck.Oh, one other thing.  Had to buy new tires for the baler.  Flotation ag tires aren't meant to pound pavement for around 800mi. or thereabouts."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Ya gotta love the highway patrol. Some of the states are pretty professional, others aren't.New Mexico is pretty good. Texas used to be very good too, but it has changed in some places. They run a thing between Brownfield and Lubbock targeting NM vehicles. Lots of people from NM going to the Big L, especially on the weekends and a lot get ticketed for the same thing that the Texas drivers are allowed to do. Son- in law went over there a couple of months ago. The speed limit is 70. He and a pack of Texas cars were running 75. He said he watched the state guy work his way through the cars and pull him over. The conversation was "You were doing 80". "No sir, my cruise control was set on 75". "You were doing 80. "Sir, I told you, my cruise control was set on 75". Cop goes back to his car, comes back and hands him a ticket and says " I gave you a ticket for not using your turn signal too". I guess the moral is keep your mouth shut and just accept what they tell you. It only cost him $300.
