COREWELD 70 Looking for first hand knowledge. How do you like it, why?Any info at all Yes I have been to the site and talked to the LWS guru.
Reply:Hello Fat Bastard, curious as to your application. The reasons why many use this sort of wire has to do with their application. A number of years ago I spoke with a Lincoln rep. about metal core wires, they originally were designed to be used where high-deposition rates were desired in robotic applications or possibly pre-weld cleaning wasn't a good option. Many found that welding on tube steel with this particular form of wire was beneficial at not experiencing as many weld defects from not properly cleaning the anti-corrosion coatings. I believe you might also notice that the wire will weld through heavy rust or mill scale much better than a regular solid wire. Additionally, metal-core wires require less arc energy to melt than a solid wire, so this allows for more energy to be directed into the base metal, hence the higher possible deposition rates. Personally, if I plan to do a lot of spray-transfer welding I do like this wire type very well. I have only used a very small amount of the particular brand/type that you asked about, I have used much more of other manufacturers. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:I've run more coreweld than I care to remember, both the 70 and c6. As aevald said it is very tolerant to rust and scale, very smooth arc, almost no spatter when it's dialed in. The only thing to watch for, is both varieties are very sensitive to fit up and like to crack if there is any kind of gaps, but if you are trying to put down a lot of metal in a hurry and can get all your joints in position it's a great option.
Reply:Hello DR87, a little off-topic here, but are you by chance a Genie veteran? Your home location and the process match pretty well, at least I know that Genie used to have quite a facility in those parts. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:You would be correct. We are actually doing really well currently. In the last year we have hired about 200 welders and cant find people fast enough.
Reply:Hello DR87, glad to hear that things have picked up considerably. Wow, 200 eh? that's quite a lot of people. Moses Lake is a nice area though, I grew up a bit to the south and east from there in Walla Walla. I'm currently in Longview, slightly north of Portland up I-5. Good luck to you folks up there. Reply:The application is CJP with backing 12" pipe to 1 1/2" plate. Conforming to AWS D1.1. With 100% UT.
Reply:Hello Fat Bastard, depending upon how you are going to be welding this, meaning is it going to be on a rotator, welded 2G position? or possibly on a rotator welded 1G position?. Welded 2G on a table or stand? Welded with the pipe horizontal, rotated by hand or flipped by quadrants. Your set-up will best determine whether this wire will work. Metal core being as fluid as it is might not work very well if you can't readily position the work to keep it oriented to allow for control of the fluidity of the weld pool. That is, unless you are possibly running some sort of pulse programming. The wire will readily pass UT when applied correctly, you might need to allow for some surface pass cleaning before subsequent layers are applied, there will likely be silica islands on the bead surfaces or along the edges of the beads. These will be very easy to remove. I hope this has made sense and can be of use in your decisions. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:Oh sorry: 2G on a rotator.Thanks for the info.
Reply:Well I finally had the time to get all the items gathered up to run some of this.WOW! Wow that is a lot of weld for .045 wire. 32V 300A(?) 462 IPM wire 75/25 I only just got it all going did a test root and then had to stop for the phone and never got back to it. I expect that I should go from 13-18 passes (with the ESAB 710X in .045) to 6-8 passes using this Coreweld 70
Reply:Certainly hope it works out as planned. PULL the trigger and hold on! Regards, Allanaevald
