Hi all,I purchased a roll cage kit for a Jeep CJ8. The 3 hoops came cut at the center of the hoop with a 6 inch inside sleeve to connect the tubing. I'm new to welding and won't be doing the welding on the cage, a friend of mine who is a welder will be doing the welding. I haven't asked him so I'm not sure if he has ever joined tubing with an inside sleeve before. I wanted to ask just for my own knowledge, the proper way to do this.  The ends that are to be welded together are ground on an angle.  Do you butt the two pieces together tight and the weld fuses the two together or do you leave a small space between the two pieces. The tubing is 1.75 with .120 wall DOM tubing. Thanks in advance
Reply:The inserts are for alignment of the tubes..Keep a LITTLE space between the tubes in that area and weld away being sure to join the insert piece with the weld..The other tubing just make sure you have a good fit and it's beveled all the way around and weld as needed..Not rocket science but easy enough..Be sure to clean the inside of the tube as far as you can get.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Thanks for the reply Zap,Outside of alignment, can I assume that the inside sleeve also makes the joint considerably stronger?

Reply:You will only need one pass on .120" wall tube.ɹǝʌo ǝɯ lloɹ 'sıɥʇ pɐǝɹ uɐɔ noʎ ɟı

Reply:I've used sleeves repairing equipment before and they do make a difference in joint strength, alignment and weldability.  (I like to think of repairing misc railway stuff as  non-destructive destructive testing...If it can be wrecked, they will find a way to wreck it in an epic way!  I still scratch my head as to how they managed to shear a 3 1/2" shaft clean in half!)Last edited by mb_welder; 05-01-2011 at 11:09 PM.
Reply:Thanks for all the replies!! We are going to do the plug welds along with a 1/8 space between each pipe.  While the jeep won't be used for anything extreme, I plan on having my 4 year old riding with me as much as possible. So anything that adds strength and safety is a good thing.  I've put lots of time and money into this project so a few more welds and some grinding is well worth it!Thanks again for everyones help!Sean
Reply:Another question.....How do I determine the correct size of the "pilot" hole on the outer pipe for the plug welds?Sean
