I need to make a trailer that will transport two 4 wheelers. I need to make it for my son in law to free up my trailer that he wants to borrow about every weekend. My trailer is a little over kill because I bought it to haul around my 8N Ford tractor. They have found a place in the southern part of the state that caters to 4 wheelers. I am always afraid my daughter or her husband is going to get hurt playing with these things. When I was young I would ride the most crazy horses in the county, but have always been a little scared of a motorcycle, and I view the 4 wheeler as something that just has two more wheels. My question is what do I need in way of metal to build the frame. I want it to be plenty strong but don't want to over build to keep it light. What would you suggest, tubing or angle and size and thickness. I would appreciate any pictures you could post of any 4 wheeler trailers you might have built to give me some ideas. You can go to (carolinaadventureworld.net/ ) and look under member pictures to see how they ride. I just can't see doing this to a 4 wheeler - I never treated my horses like this.
Reply:i would go for tubing around 2 x 2 by 1/4 inch. tubing is stronger than angle. i would make the outside framing out of tubing then use angle to build a lip for the outside. you could make it so that the curb side swings down to form a ramp. then just swing it back up and pin it into place. it wouldn't need to be very long for 4 wheelers. couple of feet maybe.
Reply:Here is a couple of side load A.T.V. trailers that I build, a lot of the guys like them cause they are easy to load and you can keep the trailer fairly small and light weight. Most of the trailer owners place a gang box or something similar over the axle to store their gear in. On some of them I also put a gas can holder up on the tongue but don't have any pictures of that to show you. Just trying to give you some ideas to work with, if this is something that peaks your interest I could give you some more details. Reply:Hey Dabar. Could you post some detailed pics of how the side rails/ramps connect to the deck? I really like that design.

Reply:Dabar39; It looks to me like the axles on those trailers are set forward from the normal position, one even looks ahead of center. Is that just my eyes or can you explain how they get loaded? Thanks,Reece
