Hi guys I am looking for a good portable generator to supply enough food to my Lincoln Electric MIG Pak 140 Wire Feed Welder. In the future we are previewing from this side of time there is fields and off the e-grid status that would make us very happy, but I do still want to use my welder now and then, any ideas so this specific welder to do the best being in the middle of no where. Thanks a lot.Sergitin.
Reply:You are going to need 20 Amps of 120 Volt power, I don't know for how long you want the generator to run each day, and what durability and reliability you desire. The degree of portability also enters into the equation.A thirteen horsepower gasoline powered generator set will provide sufficent power, and can be had for around $550 USD. You can buy them packaged as a unit or assemble your own. I chose to assemble my own with a Honda clone electric start engine and a 10KW Alternator , both from Harbor Freight. I can't speak to the durability of my generator set, as it gets run only during the monthly test.I shopped for the engine, getting a marked down floor display that was missing the ignition key and waiting untill the alternator came on sale. I mounted the alternator and engine on a piece of 1" plywood and coupled the together with a Lovejoy L-110 coupling. The battery and cables came from Walmart. I had a lot of fun making a cart to roll the generator set around on. My dentist gave me the plywood that had laminate on both sides, the wheels. came from an old tool box.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. You may pick two.Hobart AC/DC StikMate LXHarbor Freight AD HoodHarbor Freight Industrial Chop SawDeVilbis 20 Gallon, 5 HP Compressor |
